Shady garden plants/woodland.

1/3 of my garden is natural woodland. it's fantastic and the kids love it. However the part of the garden where the trees start looks horribly bare!
I've tried various plants but not many survive in the summer due to the tree coverage. Aside from filling the garden with ferns what other plants can I grow that take the shade?

Hostas, grasses, autumn crocuses, bluebells, snowdrops...
