Noooo! Greenhouse down! have picked up what I can but everything is going to need a thorough repotting tomorrow. Sad

Dread to think what my peas and beans will look like in the morning!

TheSpottedZebra · 01/06/2015 22:30

Oh no honeysuckle - that's awful. Is it broken, or salvageable - or do you need to wait til morning to tell?

honeysucklejasmine · 01/06/2015 22:40

The greenhouse itself is prob OK, just a bit battered. The plants... We'll see! I was going to pot it all out this week, but decided they wouldn't survive the winds! Have brought them all inside, roughly repotted what I can... But yes, full inspection in morning required. Sad

agoodbook · 01/06/2015 22:43

honeysuckle thats dreadful - hope things are not as bad as they seem tomorrow - we have more strong winds forecast tomorrow after lunch, so take care

I left my french beans out hardening all day. I had to call DH to rescue them as I was stuck at work. Shock on arriving home I found them sobbing clutching at each other with their poor spindly leaves curled up at the edges. It's a total horror story. I am a bad person. I have apologised repeatedly but they are still very very cross. I'm hoping tomorrow will be a better day. Grin for my baby beans ---> Flowers

And for honeysuckles greenhouse Smile

Oh no honeysuckle! How is it looking this morning? The first year we lived in this house, before I had my greenhouse, I used one of those little plastic shelving things as my greenhouse. I came home one day and the whole lot was strewn around the garden. I may have cried a bit.

Thanks agoodbook you're right - I'm going to have to squeeze things in where ever I can. Yes they are climbing beans so definitely some scope there. I did mention my vegetables woes to DH this morning and he suggested digging out a strip of the lawn next to a wall for me. Nice and sheltered but catches the sun. I might have to seriously redesign my garden at this rate!

Hope everybody has survived this terrible weather, and that Linsk's beans have recovered and forgiven you!

mousmous · 02/06/2015 07:53

it was very blustery last night, but a short inspection this morning revealed no major damage.
had to tie up the sunflowers some more.
hope your damage isn't too bad either and that the peas stop sulking

AlternativeTentacles · 02/06/2015 08:01

Noooo! Greenhouse down!

Is it one of the stand alone ones? There's a reason we call them 'blowaways!]. Paving slabs on the bottom shelf and put the bottom shelf as close to the ground as possible.

My greenhouse has no panes out [phew] I am leaving all windows and the door open at all times these days. It means the wind can blow through without taking glass with it. It also means that plants harden off on their own without my assistance as the wind moving over them makes them alot sturdier.

I wrote off yesterday - I started not being able to see because of a migraine twist and twirl which only happens about once a decade but I think I managed to stave it off with painkillers - and am meeting a friend today as they have moved our hut roof work to Friday so am going to go and meet, drink coffee, walk around one of my favourite nurseries and look at plants.

No idea what the state of the plot will look like when I pop round later. Hopefully all the beans that are out are close enough to the ground not to be damaged. But the slugs would have been out overnight so if the wind didn't get them...

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 02/06/2015 08:24

I managed half an hour at the plot yesterday, mainly weeding and digging out yet more random potatoes that keep popping up where they were last year. No damage in the garden this morning, my pop up greenhouse is against a wall and has a heavy sheet of cast iron on the bottom shelf, which does make a huge difference, but takes up most of that shelf.

AlternativeTentacles · 02/06/2015 08:31

I leave all the random potatoes. I just mulch around them and then avoid them when planting new stuff. They are often the best ones!

I've got the heated propagator on to get some stuff germinated for some workshops - never had to do that in June before!

shovetheholly · 02/06/2015 08:58

good book - yep, I'm at the top of a hill, though my garden slopes away from the house so it has a kind of buffer. It was really fierce last night, and more to come later today. My poor lilacs are in full flower and still young enough to be quite bendy - the head of one was quite bent down towards the ground this morning.

I am dreading the trip to the allotment, which is more exposed still - it's right on the edge of the city and higher up even than my house.

Flowers for the fallen greenhouse. I hope it's not that bad this morning. Sad

shovetheholly · 02/06/2015 08:59

Alternative - I hope your head feels better soon. A killer migraine is no fun at all.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 02/06/2015 09:04

Just been up to the plot, no damage apart from lid of compost bin blown away.

Alternative - hope your head is better this morning. I'd already planted all over the former potato patch, onions, so I am digging the potatoes out where I can as they can get pretty big. The onions are still very small so if one gets lifted in a clump it's easy enough to put it back, but I've managed to avoid all but a couple of them.

Honeysuckle - sorry about your greenhouse, hope it's not damaged and the plants don't suffer too much.

Cedar03 · 02/06/2015 09:07

Wet and windy here this morning. Am wondering how my beans are gettingon. Sweetcorn and squashes were brought back in the house last night so they didn't blow away.
Hope the greenhouse damage isn't too bad.
Actually although its the start of June its not unusual for us to have wet and windy weather now.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 02/06/2015 09:16

Here's a pic of my potatoes growing through cardboard.

And for a bit of cheer, here are my california poppies before yesterday.

Thank you ladies. It was a large pop up one, yes. Gutted! Still, shifted around in the dirt and found two more butternut squashes, so I hope all is not lost. Need to get planting out with things like carrots, parsnips etc really, but need more compost.

I guess that's the down side of contained gardening. No/minimal weeding, lots of compost required! Still, once I have it, I have it. Off to the shops I go!

agoodbook · 02/06/2015 16:04

Phew! afternoon all - hope everyone is okay
Home early from work , as the wind has just picked up and is howling again...
Will not be going to the plot until the morning so fingers crossed.
Cupcakes - maybe a complete Potager garden design? :)
alternative - a good plan to relax.
WhoKnows - the potatoes are looking good - and the poppies are lovely - hope they are not shredded
honeysuckle - if the squashes haven't dried out, there is hope! and even with an allotment my cry is always more compost -DH is always saying," but you've just bought some!"
No doubt about it - when you garden you are in touch with the weather Grin

TheSpottedZebra · 02/06/2015 16:45

Hope all well including people, plants and plots!

Alternative - hope you're feeling much better. Does the weather affect you at all?

Just back from a quick visit to my plot - no obvious damage, hurrah! Of course, I didn't have as bad weather as many of you. It's still quite gusty still now so I didn't stay long, and no one else was there. I still think I was an idiot to plant out the tomatoes and tomatillos yesterday, but perhaps they were better in the ground and tied to a cane, than they would have been in too-small pots in the garden? Well, they're not obviously dead. A few of my beans took a bit of a battering and needed more tying-in, but other than that, not much to report.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 02/06/2015 22:25

As I'm doing photos today, thought I'd give a cucamelon update. I brought them back into the propagator from the greenhouse on 9th May, when they had done very little for several weeks, impressive progress.

Agoodbook, thank you, those poppy flowers have gone, but the plant itself is fine and it is covered in buds, just need a sunny day to get them opening, they close up when it's dull. I always think flowers opening and closing with the light levels is a little bit of magic.

LetThereBeCupcakes · 03/06/2015 07:51

Ooh! A potager garden... That sounds good... Grin

who knows lovely to see some cucamelons - I was thinking there was something wrong with mine as they're everso spindly and I was expecting them to look like normal cucumbers, but they look like yours so that must be OK!

I have a rogue potato in the middle of my path. No idea where it's come from as I haven't grown potatoes in 4 years! Quite possibly a dog stole and buried it (labrador gardening is always an adventure!)

Seems like the worst of the bad weather is over for a while, thank goodness. Beautiful blue skies here (and three full water butts!). Really hoping to get cracking in the garden this weekend and will try to take some pictures.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 03/06/2015 10:52

I still get potatoes every year in a deep raised bed at home at least 4 years after I last actually planted any there. I dig them all out in spring and usually get enough baby spuds for a bowl of potato salad.
