I've been spending time weeding my beds so they look presentable again. I did have trouble in my brassica bed as I appear to have problems identifying parsnip and spinach seedlings from weeds, even though I have labeled the row. The cabbages and sprouts are storming along though. Next door plotter, let's call him 'John' as that is his name! Grin told me when you sow seeds once you have covered up the seeds sprinkle compost on top of the row then you know exactly where they are as the soil is a different colour. Genius! Works a treat! So I thought I had best pass that on. I have also been using my decking board plank to avoid squashing my soil and it is fun! I feel like a real gardener in my plank. This week I have planted my runner beans, more dwarf french beans, beetroot, rubarb chard, rubarb and finally dwarf sunflowers that I bought for a quid each in aldi. On Monday evening I'm posting photos of my almost finished plot! Exciting!!

Linskibinski · 03/07/2015 23:29

Ooh better add this ----> , as I appear to have forgotten significant amounts of commas in my excitement. Apologies to the pedants amongst us. Wink

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 03/07/2015 23:41

Thanks Agoodbook, I will be trying that. Your mention of Greek yogurt made me think, we always have that in too, and a friend recently introduced me to having maple syrup and strawberries with it so Zi might try that instead of honey.

Zebra - I left the cucamelons in 3" pots for longer thsn I should have, potted them on and put canes in last week, so they are probably busy establishing root growth. Lots of climby tendrils appearing now.

Half anhour of weeding and watering at the plot tonight, spotted buds on my courgettes Smile

DoreenLethal · 04/07/2015 06:21

I've done little actual gardening this week even thought I've been outdoors every day - was just about to plant out some squashes when a student turned up early [arrgghhh] so I had to catch up a little last night before the rains [yay] and today I am going to go to the community garden and get plants in. Crikey the plants need that water. And so do my water butts...

And I have an achocha to go in as well today - it's starting to get upset being in a pot...so it is going under a hazel tripod with the sweet peas.

DoreenLethal · 04/07/2015 08:55

Little bugger! I am sitting here putting together some resources for next week and a blackbird is on my Amelanchier taking the berries! How cheeky!!!

shovetheholly · 04/07/2015 11:18

Grin at your Juneberry thief, Doreen

Much-needed torrential rain and the most spectacular thunderstorm here last night. I'm hoping my waterbutts are filled up again. Planning on putting in kale, chard, caulis and cabbages this weekend, in place of my broad beans.

DoreenLethal · 04/07/2015 12:56

All my waterbutts at the gardens have already been pumped into the polytunnel and the plants in there given a good soaking this morning. All my remaining [not really, I still have about 50 but I hope to give the rest away] squashes are now planted out. And I picked up a fridge freezer for the garden hut today so we can make cordial and freeze in blocks for making drinks. Huzzah!

karatekimmi · 04/07/2015 17:58

I am still pottering around - my tomatoes have flowers but no fruit yet, the peas are awesome, I can't seem to stop my salad from bolting, my lavender "herb" has eaten all the other herbs, grown so much that the others are hidden underneath!!
My DH brought me a lovely present of different mints, spearmint, lemon mint and normal mint. I need to plant that out, I'm thinking in a container as I think it would take over if not. The corguettes have flowered, the cucumber hasn't, the rhubarb is finished, the loganberries still aren't ripe. And I'm sat inside, next to the fm eating ice pops!!

TheSpottedZebra · 04/07/2015 19:58

Not much gardening from me today either - it's just too darn hot. Again. We had a mahoosive storm last might with quite a fair bit of rain so I figure that the plot will be fine without me. So I too have pottered! I've 'rotated my armpits' - planted out a few more in the garden, moved a few more out to harden off, and potted up a few more too. Armpits everywhere! And I've been eating my first tomatoes too - the first to ripen were the yellow cherry toms in hanging baskets. I suppose the extra heat they get from being against the wall brings them on. They have been v v good, FYI Grin

Lethal your endeavours sound amazing! I'll have your 50 squashes! I'd give them such a happy home. I'd love to have enough fruit to demand a new freezer! I too love the image of your cheeky blackbird. Anyone else noticed more blackbirds that usual this year?

Tomorrow it's action stations. I want to dig up some spuds (one sort of popped out yesterday) and then use that space for last 3 courgettes, some leeks, then later when I've pulled put more, some oriental veg. But I'll start them off at home i think.

It's not too too late to sow dwarf beans is it? Please say no. I've lost faith a bit with my other beans so I might pop a few dwarf ones in. I have seed and will do so tomorrow I think.

Linski I loved reading your excited update. You write like I feel about my own growings! Did you sow your dwarf beans direct, or had you pre-sown? Please say direct!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 04/07/2015 21:24

Not a drop of rain here, lightning in the distance last night, but that is all, the ground is bone dry. I've got a water butt to take up to the plot, but as there's no shed there it will only fill slowly from it's own lid, might top it up with the hose when things are quiet, then I've got water for when others are using the tap.

Haven't been up there today, DD has been in her dance school show at the theatre in the next town so I've been over there most of the day, it was fabulous. Have done quite a bit of pruning and cherry picking at home though. I have discovered a good way of holding the cherries I pick, instead of trying to balance a basket or bowl while standing on a ladder I have been wearing an apron with big front pockets and filling those with fruit.

mousmous · 04/07/2015 21:42

karate def plant mint out in a container to, ehm, contain it or it will take over the garden.

last night's downpour was very welcome. loads of (tiny&green) toms on the plants and the first courgette will be ready to eat in a couple of days.

agoodbook · 04/07/2015 22:09

evening !

  • we had the big storm last as well, right over our heads, which woke me at 3 o clock - still raining at 6.30 when I got up for work.
No plot stuff at all since Wednesday, so am off early tomorrow before everything else gets in the way. Strawberries to pick , and quite possibly redcurrants- (they were nearly ready during the week.) Cauliflowers to plant out, peas to sow, and more than likely, a lot of weeding... At home in the greenhouse, the cucumbers have finally started to motor on, though no flowers yet, lots of little green peppers and lots of tomatoes set,, and the summer raspberries are about to get ripening - had 4 so far :)

morning all! thespottedzebra yes I have direct sewn beans!! Who knows if there is enough time, but lets give it a whirl! I'm working afternoons today so no plotting for me. So I thought I would post a few pics of my plot journey so far. Some before and after pics. I started a photo diary from day one on my plot. The difference in how it looked then to how it looks now made me all smiley inside. Grin so fellow plotters, from April 20th 2015 to now.

Views from the back of my plot. All the digging and sweating and planting has been worth it. I'm only half way there really, I've no shed, no greenhouse and i'm untidy and mucky but I love it! Grin

Linski - that is an amazing amount of work you have put in - it looks great! And good for mind and body :)
Well, I didn't manage everything this morning - did get cauliflowers in , and pick yet more strawberries ( getting fed up now, and I dont like frozen strawberries). Lifted some potatoes for tea , and some weeding, but tomorrow I have some spare time, so redcurrants are starting to need picking shallots are ready to lift and I need to sow those peas!
I did spend a very nice hour later this afternoon at home pottering in the greenhouse . I have had to repot the aubergines ( I shall have to check how big they grow) as they are getting big, with some flowers coming I think.

linski you've managed to do a lot in such a short time!
agoodbook you could make jam or ice cream with the strawberries.

Poured with rain yesterday morning which gave everything a good soak. On Saturday we harvested our first potatoes - really pleased as they were a good size. We ate them for dinner yesterday. There's more to come up. Also harvested our garlic which seems to have done well in spite of the rust.

Yesterday afternoon managed to get over and do some weeding and then planted green manure where the garlic had been. Will need to get over there a couple of times this week as we're away next weekend.

Wow, everyones gardening efforts are showing great returns.
I'm still sniggering at the rotating armpits, and waiting with baited breath Diet for news of the jungle taming DH Grin

We have been cooking in the heat up here, we've had some of the rain and aglor

violetwellies · 06/07/2015 11:19

A glorious (sorry, phone has mind of its own) thunderstorm. It woke everyone but me, sadly those who were woken woke me up.
The rain wad really heavy, but still not enough, DS's radishes are a bit pathetic. The peas have started but they get eaten pod and all before the pead start to swell Smile
Potatoes are massive , some are just coming into flower but I've no idea what variety they are.
We are still inundated with red cabbage plants despite giving a carrier bag full to next doors. Ive got three rows in.

violetwellies · 06/07/2015 12:37

Blackfly on my beans, do I pich the tops even tho they're flowering? Or is there any magic cure that I should know about?

Good to see everyone is enjoying the rain. It has made a whole lot of good to our allotments, particuarly pumpkins which seem to have doubled in size overnight.

More forcast for tomorrow am for us!

I just got back from planting up the red cabbages and chard and thinning the beetroot. Just the radishes and v late cucumbers to go in and then we are all planted up until the autumn!

Where do you get kidney bean seeds?
