Our cherry blossom tree has had all its lower boughs sawn off, will it be ok?

We told our landscaper to cut down all the self grown cherry tree saplings. Somehow he translated this into 'cut down all the trees'. He had cut off all the lower boughs of one of our lovely big mature cherry blossom trees before I caught him. It looks a bit silly but it is still essentially tree shaped. I'm just worried that it might not survive such a drastic pruning at this time of year. Is it likely to be ok?

My dad cut a cherry blossom down to just a stump once, years ago. It regrew its branches and was fine. They're pretty hard to kill!

Oh good, that's reassuring, thanks.
