Pergola or sale shade for my small cottage garden?

We moved in last July and the garden was a jungle.
DH cracked on and stripped everything back so it was usable.

Now it's getting spring like I want to get out there and make it my 2nd lounging space (funky deck chairs and new dining set chosen yesterday)

Anyway, would like some shade for summer afternoons but really hate umbrellas.
Would like something a bit more permanent which looks fab all year round.

It's a small terraced cottage.
The house has French doors leading into a patio where the dining set would be.
Please excuse the rubbish pics, what would you do - pergola or sale shade here?

I've never had a sail shade but I love love love my pergola. It's covered in grape vine and surrounded by herbs. It's a lovely place to sit and relax on hot days.

Which direction does the patio face?

The garden is South easterly facing.

The patio is very deep- would the pergola need to come out to the grass or would it go on top of patio?

The pergola posts would need to go in the ground. I'm not sure how you'd work it because we built our patio after the pergola was up.
