Pot Grown Christmas Tree with lack of roots have i been done???

I ordered a Pot grown christmas tree online from a christmas tree farm in yorkshire as I've always wanted one for my front garden. It arrived today with a root !!! Don't laugh I was so excited when it arrived. It looks like its been dug up and shoved in a pot definately not pot grown. But what I would like to know is if this tree is likely to survive also if it had been pot grown would I be able to see a healthy root system ? The tree looks really healthy at the moment. Any advise gratefully received.

Oh dear, sounds a bit iffy!! Might be worth giving it a try though, with a bit of TLC it might survive. Exactly how much root is there thought? Is there enough to plant?

You could try planting it out and in the bottom of the hole put a good lot of bonemeal or fishblood and bone (both of these encourage root growth). Another trick is to put it into a square hole (again encourages the roots to spread and develop).

Once you've filled the hole back in I'd put a good layer of mulch around the base to help protect it from the cold, then just see how it goes.

If it survives the winter, give a a fresh mulch in the spring to help it retain moisture and then make sure it desn't dry out throughout next summer.

I do hope you're tree survives, but if you really think you've been done complain!

My beautiful tree has one root not a bad size I was just expecting a few more roots. My tree is actually a supreme nordman fir. The farm I got it from said to plant it straight away and not to feed it until the spring!! Mulch is a great idea keep my root nice and cosy I'll do that first thing tomorrow.

i bunged my xmas tree from last year in the garden and didnt plant it particularly well and itsthriving, im quite surprisedtoo be honest

7up did you tree have roots? Was it a dug up and put in a pot for christmas kind of tree? If so it sounds very encouraging

childminderjanet,ibought the tree for a £5 in a pot with roots and coz i couldnt be bothered to dump it i dug ahole and put it in the garden, its got new shoots as well so reckon yours will be fine

Yes I planted it as soon as it arrived, have now put a cosy layer of mulch around the bottom
