Indoor hyacinths for Christmas - when to plant?

I know it's rather early to be thinking about Christmas, but I was hoping someone could give me advice about when to plant bulbs in time to flower around the Christmas period?

I'm thinking about planting bulbs in jam jars to have on the table. I'm sure I read somewhere that they should be left in a dark place for a bit first. Sorry, am a bit clueless so any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

Could rot in jam jars, as no drainage. These should help:
