If you have apple trees, how do you store the apples?

It's my first summer in a house with apple trees in the garden and I've no idea what to do with them all. We do have outbuildings that they can be kept in although mice might eat them all.

Do I need to out them inside something? I've seen lovely but expensive apple trays in garden centres but I would lots of those and don't want to spend silly money on storing them.

I pick up fruit boxes from the supermarket and put the apples in them. You need to have them not touching each other. The boxes cartons of grapes, etc. come in are really good as they stack without the contents of the boxes getting squashed. You can put straw in to cushion the fruit and keep them apart, but I've never bothered. We store them in the garage off the floor.

We have a pear tree as well, but I've never had any luck storing them, unfortunately.

The bulk of ours I cook in chutneys or prepare and freeze.

Thank you. Lots of good ideas there.
