Beer traps to ensnare slugs and snails - what other alcohol works? Cider?

Beer traps have been a roaring success but I've run out of beer. Not prepared to offer them gin. Would cider work?

It doesn't need to be alcohol, it's the yeast they're attracted to. I make a concoction of flour, water, sugar and yeast, works a treat:

2 cups of warm water
2 heaped spoons of flour
1 teaspoon of sugar
1/2 teaspoon of yeast

Save the booze for yourself Grin

Oh thanks for posting that, I'm sick of the little buggers. I've no beer either. And I'm going to drink the cider.

Just put in a load of sunflowers and fully expected them to be decimated tomorrow morning but will get in the kitchen Breaking Bad style and concoct a lethal beverage for them.

This was the one who ate my sweet peas. Grrr. I put a marigold in there thinking he would prefer that but sadly not.

Yeast! Thank you so much, I had no idea. Do they still die happy?

My sweet peas are suffering too, TenMinutes. They must be delicious.

I'm in panic mode now. No beer. No yeast. No cider. drunk that

My wee plants will be at the mercy of the bastard slugs. We are doomed TheCheckerdy.

I also have no yeast. There's always the option of going out in the night in yer pjs, with a torch, and putting them in a bucket of water, possibly with salt or other deadly stuff added.

I have had a slug obsession lately, first year with growing flowers and the bastard slugs kept eating away at them!

After reading about the beer traps I had a go with wine leftover from Xmas but only caught one.

One night my bestest biggest sunflower got annihilated and it sent me bat shit crazy so ran out with the salt and they all shrivelled to death.

Have only seen one or two since.

Have you read about the Spanish slugs? They are 'invading' (according to the daily mail) but could be rather dangerous if they mate with our slugs and eat important crops!

These are a couple of pics of the ones from my garden. Rip Wink

It's been a horrible few years for slugs, that wet summer and then a mild, wet winter. I have heavy clay soil and I don't think it ever dries out.

I've been fighting slugs for years but I've only just found out about these guys. I don't think I've ever seen one though. If I can find a few then I might have a go at breeding them.

Eaurouge, I'll keep my eye out for you when I do my nightly slugwatch rounds Wink
