What tool to get dandelions out of lawn?

My dad used to use an old potato peeler... I'm beginning to think he might have had a good idea! This year seems particularly bad for dandelions - any tips?

Make sure you get all the root out and if you have really loads, concentrate on picking off all the flower heads before they ripen. It can be done, you just need to be determined. I pulled out 5 dandelions every time I went into the garden last summer and finally they are under control. Good luck :)

I've got a thing like \link{www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00440RQDG/ref=mp_s_a_1_18?qid=1398661261&sr=1-18&pi=AC_SX110_SY165\this} (although mine came from Aldi & wasn't described specifically as a dandelion weeder, they're the only things that really need it to get the bastard roots out!)

Round here the council stopped spraying weeds a few years ago & the dandelion population (???) seems to be exploding

Oh, it's an EU thing (I thought it was financial)

Looking at the Amazon link, it seems that my dad's potato peeler wasn't dissimilar ...

So maybe anything narrow and pointy should do the trick.

Well mine is about a foot long so not quite a potato peeler Grin

Actually from reading the reviews a big screwdriver would probably do - it sounds as if you need to drive it down all round the root & then it will just pull out

StUmbrageinSkelt · 28/04/2014 06:54

DH uses a screwdriver.

I use an ordinary old knife (but not for anything else food-related afterward!)

Or use a lawn weed&feed solution, or paint on weed killer mixed into cheap wallpaper paste.

Wolf do a tool that you 'screw' into the lawn, but it needs a T-handle and isn't cheap.

YY to the gadget that nicest linked to - it pulls them right out by the root. Very useful.

I've got one of these fancy Dan tools

It works very well but seem to break easily, I'm on my fourth but I keep the receipt and the it back to swop for a new one each time

OP, you may be sorted by now but here is another weeding tool suggestion: I bought this weeding tool last year and I have been very pleased with it.

It is good on dandelions and all sorts of other weeds.
