Climbing rose and a clematis - best way to do it please?

Hi,

I have a climbing rose which was potted in the same container as a bamboo - I have now found out this was a bad idea! So, today I have repotted the rose own it's own in a tallish, trombone terracotta pot. The bamboo is now on it's own.

I have a clematis that is not thriving at the base of a massive leylandii (obvious!), so I want to train it up the same trellis as the rose. I have read roses and clematis go well together.

Do I plant the clematis in the trombone pot with the rose? Not sure there is enough room for two sets of roots. Could I plant the clematis in with the bamboo (next to the rose pot), so then I could train it up the trellis? Which one is the best thing to do - I have pretty much no gardening knowledge! Thanks for your advice!

Glad to hear climbing roses and clematis go together as I bought both about a month ago. I put the rose in the ground against the wall and the clematis in a big pot and they are both growing fantasticallySmile Could you just get an other pot for the clematis?

I could get another pot but already against that wall is the bamboo pot, the rose pot and then pots with hostas in them. It all might get a bit pot-ty!

If I could put the clematis in one of the existing pots, that would be great. It is paved up to the wall, hence the need for pots, no ground!

Yours sounds lovely Smile

Could you either move the hostas or put it in with one of them?

There is much more room in the bamboo pot than the hostas - just not sure if the bamboo would be too thirsty for the clematis?

I wouldn't put it in with a bamboo. Either get one big pot for the rose and clematis to share, or put the clematis in its own pot.

Clematis like shaded roots so would be better combined with the hostas than the bamboo. Try and get large/deep pots for climbers as they have deep toot runs. Do feed the rose and clematis too.
