Plant/little tree suggestions for completely shaded porch

I have bought two nice pots to put either side of my front door but don't know what to put in them.

Our front door is to the side of our house and so is total shaded by our neighbours house at all times. I like the thought of something like a bay tree or one of those ball type trees (sorry no idea what they're called), but as I totally lack green fingers at the best of times have no idea of any kind of plant would just die with no sun at all.

Would I be best going down the fake route?

Any recommendations either way would be gratefully received.

How good are you at watering? Are you looking for something permanent or would you be happy with something seasonal/temporary? Is it very dark shade or relatively bright?

Hmm I could probably make an effort to water it. I would prefer something long lasting and permanent rather than seasonal.

I would probably go for a japanese maple in each one, provided the place is not exposed to too much wind. You could then underplant with something else for flowers/seasonal colour as strikes your fancy. There are quite a few shade loving ground cover plants.

The box trees and bay trees on a standard (long thin trunk, then ball atop) don't need much light, I don't think, as they don't flower.

2 little cypress trees could look nice. WHat style is your house, and what is your decor taste like?

Box is fine in shade, Bay less so,
Get very large pots as it means less watering.

Sorry just seen these latest replies. The house is Victorian, my taste is quite conservative probably. I have bay trees by the back door, I love them. Also love those box shrubs, they could be good. I have bought reasonably large pots, that's good re the watering!

Sarcococca might be a good choice. This is Winter (or Christmas) Box and has sweet smelling flowers in wintertime. It is evergreen and will be perfectly happy in complete shade. There are a few different varieties.

I am having some for the containers by my front door.
