Was going to suggest pansies til I READ THE REST OF POST. violas are very nice - like pansies but smaller flowers, more delicate and lots of different colour combos.
Also cyclamen, primroses and grasses( yellow, green, black and red).

primroses sound nice anyone had luck with them from seed or can you not grow them from seed?

primroses are lovely but i've never tried them from seed.

i fancied a chnage from pansies for winter colour and today at the garden centre I got some Dianthus diamond purple. Apparantly they are a new strain of pinks that flower through autumn and again in spring.

Anyway pansies don't work - have tried them before as winter flowers and they just sit there and sulk until spring.

If we were meant to have winter flowers we wouldn't be living in the UK
