Protecting garden from being cat toilet for the winter

Our neighbours cat visits our garden every day to relieve itself, last winter the garden had masses of poo in it by the time I got out there in the spring. Is there anything we can do to protect it? Last year it had areas it dug, but also pooed directly onto bulb 'reeds' from the dead irises (not sure whether I should be trimming these?). In the summer we just regularly clear it up.

You can buy cat repellent crystals, I think that's what my neighbour uses. My big cat came home smelling lemony-fresh the other day, but he poos in our garden anyway (we have a gravel path that makes a handy cat loo ).

Are there any patches of bare soil? My cats can't be bothered to pick amongst the plants but if I dig over a bed then they're straight there. Bamboo canes can help too, nobody likes getting poked in the bottom when they're trying to poo. If you've got an area in your garden that's tucked away, like underneath a shrub, then you could put a bit of sand down there and the cat would probably poo there instead of in your beds. Cats are very lazy and sand is easier to dig in.

Could you run a wire along the top of the fence? Not barbed wire, just plain wire a couple of inches higher than the top of the fence so that a cat couldn't walk along the top.

Another way to get rid of him is every time you see him, hosepipe the bugger. I would have no worries about anyone doing that to my cats, it's harmless and it works.

Cover bare soil with granite stones the sharp one not the pea sized stuff that will stop them plus it will make the garden look nice :)

weight it down with stones or tie it up on sticks if you want it off the soil. Cats won't like the netting because they can't dig the soil and don't like the feeling.

We have a similar problem but with foxes, they deposit it in the middle of the lawn :(
We have the cat crystals on the soil and they don't go on there, the cats that is - our neighbours have several.
