Can I plant a new tree where the old one was?

I had a very old, diseased apple tree removed earlier this year and now want to put in a new one more or less in the same position.

Not another fruit tree, am thinking of perhaps an ornamental cherry.

Can I just use the same hole but with lots of lovely fertiliser to Kevin a good start?

It isn't advisable. The old tree will have exhausted all the nutrients there.
