What is responsible for the huge globules of what looks like spit

I nearly blamed the kids but realised it must be something else

Its cookoo spit, made by a tiny bug which lives inside(the spit) it stops birds from eating them.

is washing them off with the hose sufficient?

have just googled and it doesn't exist .. are you pulling my inexperienced leg?

I thought cuckoo spit as well (could be an elaborate bluff bwteen Marne and me, though...)

No not pulling your leg, go and poke a bit, inside is a little bug.

interesting how its on my mint and not my rosemary .. which is right next door .. that page says it likes rosemary
