50cm x 2m soil patch at the end of the garden near to the back fence, what to plant

The rest of my small garden is mostly patio. But as I enter the garden, I face these two panels of fence at the back. The soil strip is narrow, max 50cm, mixed with gravel. Ideally I would like a 2-3 meters tall shrub/tree which is narrow spread, green, nice autumn colors, cover/detract from the fence and provide some privacy. Thought about bamboo, japanese acers, japanese cherries, laurel bush, lilac, but most either grow too tall or too wide eventually. Any advice please?

What about a red robin? Evergreen and don't mind being chopped.
