Miniature rose

A friend gave me two miniature roses, they came originally from China. She had nowhere to plant them so gave them to me. They've been growing very happily in my garden against the wall, for 2 years now.

They've never flowered.

I wonder if anyone knows anything about them? Like, do they flower? How can I help them flower? I thought they might be sulking when they first went in so wasn't expecting great things from them the first year or so. I did think they might flower last year, but they didn't, just grew into a great mass of leaves and thorns!

SIL pruned them pretty savagely a few months ago, so they're probably sulking again! I do talk to them encouragingly and nicely, which works on the other roses we have, and honeysuckle and pretty well everything else! A pic is on my profile, though it's hard to see too well, but I promise they are rose leaves, just very small. The thorns are disproportionately savage too!

Anyone got any idea?

How much sun do they get? Few roses are completely happy in shade.

They get full sun all morning and probably half the afternoon, though they're never really in the shade. There's actually very little shade in the garden anywhere except under the trees - they're not under the trees. It's very light in the afternoon but not full sun beating down on them.

The woman who gave them to me told me to put them where they are.

Roses like a feed of tea leaves or coffee grinds and a chopped up banana skins around the roots.
Phosphorus will encourage blooms and feed the roots so maybe give a feed with something like Doffs Super Phosphate or any other plant food with a high Phosphate content. Or if you want to do it the organic way then Human wee is a great souse of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium all of which will help your roses to thrive.

I don't have mini roses, instead I have climbing ones and fertilise them every year. Mind you my daughter has the same and does nothing and bloom brilliantly every year .

Last summer we didn't have much sun - see if they bloom this year

My roses really suffered last year. They all got rose rust and i sent the summer picking off the leaves trying to stop it spreading. They are looking a lot better this year so hopefully the hours of leaf picking were worthwhile.

I have tea leaves as I use them on the camellias, and I can get coffee grounds easily. Forgot about banana skins, did them with our normal roses a couple of years ago and then forgot all about them. I think I'll plant some garlic near them too.

Then we'll see.

Agreeing with posters above - roses are greedy feeders, at any size, so good luck with additions.
