What's the best way to grow peas please?

Why do I bother? Every year I try to grow peas and the bleeping pigeons eat the lot. This year I had 4 healthy rows of mange tous, sugar snaps, asparagus peas and normal peas. I created a very unattractive string and tinfoil bunting which kept them off for a bit. They've worked out that it's just not scarey and are now tucking in. Apart from netting is there any other surefire method of keeping my peas safe?

I've been growing mine over a semi hoop in the ground made of chicken wire to support them then making a net cover hanging a good foot over then with bamboo poles and fruit netting. It seems to work here.

We had hanging cds recommended but that may be no better than the tin foil.
