What can I do about my neighbours blackberry bushes?

After a lifetime balconies & window boxes, this is my second year caring for my lovely garden and I am so excited about getting to grips with it.

I want a cottage feel and the garden itself is halfway there but the one blight are my neighbours' wild blackberry bushes which run the length of our wire fence (approx 70 ft). I bloody hate them, whatever I plant in the borders just gets attacked by massive thorny branches. I thought the garden was looking reasonable last year but when I look at the photos all I see are messy thorns.

It's his fence, otherwise I'd erect a six foot wooden partition and be done with it. Although, they're so huge and grow so quickly the buggers would still find their way over

I'd put your own fence up inside your boundary. Although the brambles will still burrow underneath you can keep on top of them more easily.

Yes, put up your own fence. And be ruthless about digging out any brambles that surface on your side.

you can put a fence up. I did. yes some still come over, but only enough to eat :)

Another vote here for putting up your own fence Dig out any plants that grow in you side of the fence too as they send out runners and are a bloody nightmare.

You could get your neighbours permission to spray them with gypsophilate (weedkiller), dig them out (his side too) and get rid of them for good?

I'm not a fan of chemicals in the garden generally, but sometimes it makes sense to use them.

If you're determined to nuke them, Brushkiller us likely to work veter even than glysophate.

We put up our own fence, as we share a side fence with about 5 houses, where it is their back fence.

All of them have taken down the original fence, to give themselves an extra 6 inches of land (woopidoo!) One neighbour, who has luckily moved out now, told us off for doing anything to "her" fence (we took some decorative trellis down, temporarily). When DH reminded her that it was our fence, and she had removed the original one, she seemed to have suffered some convenient type of amnesia.

We had a similar problem with Russian vine. Neither the elderly neighbour nor us knew whose fence it was, and it was rotten anyway, so we offered to replace it at our expense. While it was down we took the opportunity to dig out as much of the hideous vine's roots as we could, and it solved the problem. She still had some on her side but ours was free. Any that sneaked over the top after that got squirted with glyphosate.

Whats the active ingredient in Brushkiller? I've not heard of it - I don't like chemicals but where I do use them I want to use them as little as possible, so need them to be as effective as possible.
