Square or diamond? Does it make a difference to whatever is climbing up it (if so, what?!) or is it simply an aesthetic thing?

Doesn't really make much difference ime - things can be tied to it whatever shape the holes are! If self clinging plant you'll need a bit more surface area for it to take hold.
