Talk to me about cold-frames. You know you want to. What do they comprise? And do I necessarily need one.

Bubble, my love, sod the cumboobers (ds2's word) - I have just seen you are pregnant. That's made my day, you marvellous person, you. Congratubloodylations Grin!

Why thankyou, moo. X

Hub's being a bit shy about his cucumber prowess tonight.

I am fighting the urge to make risque and childish remarks about cumboobers.

I'm no expert but a cold frame tends to be an unheated low construction with a glass/perspex top you prop open. Good for raising hardy annual type seeds I think. You open it in the day and shut at night to harden up young plants before you plant them out. Move things into it from a heated greenhouse.
Where's Monty Don when we need him?
Oh hello bubble99 just realised it's you again!

marthamoo · 24/04/2006 21:53

I saw a grow your own tomatoes doodah in Woolies - am tempted.

tallmummy · 24/04/2006 21:54

I grow lots of salad veggies. Toms, cucumbers peppers and salad leaves. I've a v.decrepit old green house - unheated.

marthamoo · 24/04/2006 21:56

I don't have any kind of greenhouse (or room for one). Can I grow toms on my kitchen window sill? The kit in Woolies is just a terracotta bowl, with seeds and compost, afaik (sorry for hijacking your cucumber thread and turning it into a general salad-type one, bubble).

bubble99 · 24/04/2006 21:57

Could I make do with one of those plastic shelf/tent thingies which are used for propogating (that was difficult to spell at this time of night!) thingies??

You can. When I lived in Balham I grew toms in a window box. Also you can get hanging basket kits with trailing cherry toms.

hub2dee · 24/04/2006 21:58

Leave my sodding cucumber out of this. Grin

Wotcha bubb... I gave you a \link{http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=1375&threadid=167169\shout before, but you were stuck on a covert mission...

What are you growing ? What do you want to grow ? I don't have a cold frame. I have a warm trunk though.

tallmummy · 24/04/2006 21:58

The window box bit was for marthamoo. I've seen those fold up greenhouses bubble and I reckon they would do the job.
