Gaps in a Leylandi hedge- what can I plant.

I have a Leylandi hedge shielding us from the neighbours, which has grown well. However there are gaps at the bottom. Is there anything that will grow there, in the shade. I had thought maybe laurel or red robin- would be lovely to see some colour. Thanks!

How tall does it have to be? The soil under leylandii is always really crappy. I've had luck with yellow archangel, it covers the ground well. It can get out of control if you leave it but it's easy enough to just yank some out.

The soil is clay and rubbish. Plus very, very dry in summer ( little rainfall in summer). That looks gorgeous, I would love to look out on a bit of colour. Thanks!

It's unlikely you'll manage to get anything to flourish there, the leylandii will be taking all the moisture and light.

My advice would be to get rid of a few more then plant your Red Robin. Avoid laurel (the one with big shiny leaves) as it is a bit of a thug also.
