gardening ignoramus - daff and hyacinth bulbs - what now?

I know nothing about gardening but would really like to get into a bit if only to make ours a nicer place to be. Can anyone help - I was recently given a couple of pots of daffs and hyacinths, both lots now died (I hope that's normal - I DID water them!), but I'd really like to re-use the bulbs. Can I plant them in the garden? Do I need to store them somewhere else or do it now?
Thanks in advance...

wait for 6 weeks after flowering then thye can be cut back. Take them out of soil and keep in dry dark place till autumn. Then plant them in garden in the autumn.
