I seem to be just feeding the slugs

With lettuce. My early salad leaves were fine but since the beginning of July every single seedling (and I seem to have planted hundreds) has been munched overnight.
Seems I will end up buying lettuce soon.

Sharp sand or around the plants works for me

Coffee grounds are supposed to work & crushed egg shells.
Personally I leave it all to my little Call Ducks I have on slug patrol on the garden.
