What to plant now in a vegetable bed?

We've just moved into a new house that has 3 lovely raised vegetable beds at the end of the garden. They're all empty at the moment but I'd love to plant something in them that will allow us to pick them this year.

DS (2.7) is not keen on eating vegetables so I thought that if I could get him involved in growing them then he might be a bit more keen to eat them! I thought some cut and come again lettuces would be good but any ideas for what else I could put in?

Lettuce, spring onion, rainbow chard, cabbage, oriental vegetables as need to be planted after the longest day so they don't bolt, radish , spinach, Florence fennel.

If you buy some bean and courgette plants you should get a crop this year. Then in the autumn you can get ahead of the game planting, overwintering garlic, onion, broad beans and peas plus get any fruit bushes you plan on having in.

Oh yes, forgot herbs, they're good to have, you can sow basil and coriander now.

Beware though, slugs are everywhere this year and will try to eat everything.

Are you me?

II moved into a place with three raised beds on Monday. I am planting beetrootm, chard, florence fennel, rocket, raddiccio, lettuce and radish this w/e.

I planted some purple sprouting broc seedlings I had growing on a window sill for two months.

Hia

Thanks for the suggestions, lots to be getting on with. Sadly I suspect the reason for the membrane at the back of the garden is to keep the convolvulus under control! This could keep me occupied for some time, sigh.

All that's been said plus French beans, carrots, leeks.
If you're near an Aldi they're currently selling veg plants, £2.99 for 15 plants. My branch had cabbage, kale, swedes, broccoli, onions & a couple of others I've forgot.
