I was watching a weed in my garden grow, leaving it as I was curious to see what it was, (hopeful that it may have been a poppy). When it got to waist height and had fleshy, fairly wide leaves I thought it wasn't, but I was still curious to see what the flowers were. The stems have those little hairs that you get with poppies, but there are loads of buds on the plant (which looks quite bushy now). This morning, now the plant is over 5 feet, the top bud has opened and is papery like a poppy.

What type of poppy is this? I thought they were single stemmed and had scratty, sparse, feathery, leaves...

Could be opium poppy. Is the flower mauvish? I have them popping up Hmm in all sorts of places but never come back in the same place two years running.
Also opium poppy leaves are silver/green.

The leaves are light green, the flower is pink with mauve base - although has closed now so I can't see the inside. The inside bit where the nectar and pollen is, isn't black though, it's yellow.
I'll google the opium poppy and see if i can get a decent pic of the leaves come up.
If that's not it, I think I'll take a photo and load it on here tomorrow.

A little bit late to be helpful, but maybe a hollyhock? All the poppies in my garden have one flower and not lots of buds and hollyhocks grow tall.

The branching and buds do sound more like a hollyhock. Can you post a picture?
