Anyone any experience of astroturf?

After years trying to keep our grass looking remotely like a lawn despite having a house full of kids and dogs, I am considering astroturf. Has anyone had it, is it any good etc?

I know a few people who have it (I live in foreign parts) and I know that it's really expensive. It's quite rough too but it's as green as green can be. It's better than dead grass. Or mud.

I have it and I love it! I have a small garden off the kitchen with raised planter beds, and the grass or any ground cover would never have grown because it doesn't get enough sun. There are different kinds of astroturf, and the one I've got isn't rough at all, and really quite soft.

It was somewhat expensive to install, but it requires zero maintenance for ever - no fertiliser, no replanting nothing. Fab and saves you time. I'm sure it works out cheaper in the long run than trying to maintain a lawn. It needs to be raked now and then to keep the grass standing upright and that's it.

The only thing to be careful off is that it can get hot in the sun (its made from plastic after all) but this is probably not such an issue for you in the UK? I am in SA.

And its great for kids playing on. And best of all, it looks really fantastic, all the time.

I couldn't be more encouraging, honestly.
