Small deep holes in lawn - what's the cause?

We have found a narrow deep hole in our lawn, which we have filled in twice over the last couple of months. It has 'reopened' or been reopened this week and a new hole has appeared nearby. We think it may be mice as it's around 2-3cm in diameter and about 30cm deep. There is a little spoil on the outside of the hole. There are a lot of worms in our lawn this year - could the mice be after these? Any advice as these holes are getting near the house and after last year's mouse and rat (shudder) problems I am not keen on more rodent problems. TIA.
