Wormeries

Please can someone tell me about wormeries. In particular:

1. Are they worth having?
2. Do they need to be taken into a garage or shed if it's particularly cold? How cold?
3. Am I likely to find maggots in them?
4. If 2 and 3 and yes then am I likely to walk into my garage and find that all the maggots have turned into flies and I have an infestation?
