Growing a flower of any type indoors quickly at this time of year?

Didn't think before speaking but due to thinking it was the height of summer, I said to DD that we should grow a flower for show and tell (Reception class) as it would be much more interesting than another toy.

Except I don't know how to grow a flower indoors (no greenhouse) at this time of year! What flowers? Need to see it grow so to speak.
HELP!

How about a bulb? Hyacinths, Paperwhite narcissus and Amaryllis are all good.

Simply put in pot in kitchen? Will this work?
Thank you

How soon is show and tell? The other thing (although I've never grown it and am relying on what I've read) that is fast-growing is lucky bamboo, which sprouts very quickly.

If you buy a hyacinth, make sure you buy one that says it's 'prepared', ie suitable for indoor forcing. Tips from the RHS here.
