Has anyone ever grown a magnolia in a pot?

Did it work? What variety was it? I have a half barrel which is currently full of shallots which will be harvested soon, and I would really love a magnolia tree but have no room for one anywhere else, so thought that might be a good solution. Thanks, all.

I had a star magnolia for about a decade, in a large pot in a backyard in Manchester. It did very well, despite the rain and snow.
I left it with a friend when I moved, and it's now in her garden and still going strong.
