I just got a stone out of its avocado - what do I do with it now to make it grow?

I know I'm not likely to get fruit; it would just be nice to have a new leafy plant!

I grew one, and it made a nice leafy plant, but the leaves kept going brown and discoloured. Despite taking advice, that said I was maybe over-watering (or under - a while ago now) I was not able to stop this happening. Eventually I put it in a sheltered spot in the garden to fend for itself! Would be interested to know how you get on!

Oh, I just planted it in multi-purpose compost btw.

You can pop the stone in a jar of water, then place the jar in a dark place until it germinates. When it has started sprouting shoots pop it in a pot of house plant compost. Good luck, and keep us posted! Smile

I accidentally grew an avocado stone in my compost heap!!! As a result I'd recommend whacking a bit of a slot into the stone with a knife and keeping it nicely moist and as warm as possible in the the potting compost.

Cripes - just had a trip down memory lane! My Gran was always growing avocado plants from the stones. From memory she always started them off partially submerged in water then potted them up. I seem to remeber them having lovely oval leaves, but never getting beyond 12" big before they died! But goodluck and let us know how you do!

I had a great one from a stone - in my case it was dumped in a jam jar and forgotten about. Eventually there was life - it was just like Wall-E.
