Hmm not sure. Is it in flower now? That could narrow it down a bit. It looks a bit like a periwinkle, but it's hard to tell from the photo

Looks like Sweet William although I might be (am probably!) wrong.

It is in flower now, and I've seen it in the flowerbeds in the park. It's up to 2 foot tall, with woody stems. I think it's quite cheery and would like to get one, but have no idea what it is. Definitely not sweet william or periwinkle...

Oh yes I recognise it from our local park now! Has quite a strong fragrance. But I havent't a clue what it'd called, sorry! The white flowers smell a bit like curry powder!

You are looking for a late-flowering perennial if this is what you want for your garden.

I've taken another photo ! (bit of a delay because of technical problems...). Phlox all seem to have round flowers, but the flowers on this have 4 petals grouped at the top.

Any flower-identification experts out there?

No, I'm pretty sure it's cleome, reaching the end of it's flowering season so that the petals are broadly unfurled.

You can grow them yourself from seed, but I found they weren't the easiest to germinate and bring on - you have to germinate them early, and then keep them indoors until all frost risk is past. I had to sow a lot to get a few successful plants. However, they were very much admired in the garden.

leaves look like lillac im pretty sure its a lillac but flowers do look more like rohdidendrum (sorry spelling)

That looks like a phlox to me...

Definitely cleome. Can you get close enough to touch it? Cleomes have spiny stems.

GrendelsMum - I dream of white cleome but have never managed to grow a viable plant as the snails eat them all. I am of your success!

The one advantage of my poor stony soil is that I have very few snails and slugs!

I do try to keep very wildlife friendly, though, and get a lot of birds and a couple of frogs into the garden, which I think does make a difference.

The problem for me is that our local urban wildlife comprises so many cats and foxes, which means fewer birds (despite all my efforts to entice and feed them) and so rampant snails and slugs. Grr.
