How to get rid of ants in patio garden?

We suddenly have an ant colony in our patio garden. DD doesn't want to play outside any more because they keep going up her legs. What's the best way to get rid of them?

Nippon. It's a gel - you put it on an area and the ants lap it up then take it back to their nest. It's really good - but not child friendly. However, as you only have to put a few blobs down - i put a few bits on duct tape and took it up again once the ants had fed. Much more effective than powders and works a treat. Takes a day or two but definitely works.
