How do students find accommodation?

Feeling a stupid asking this but how do you find accommodation for your uni child? My son just got into Manchester Met, but we weren’t expecting this. We thought he’d be going to a quite local university and staying at home for the first year. I’ve had a look at the hall of residence website and they all appear to be taken. What do we do? How did your kids find accommodation? My mind is blank 🫣

The uni should send an email with links and details, dont worry. There will be loads of options in Manchester x

Is it his insurance choice, or did he go through clearing?

ElizaSchuyler · 13/08/2026 12:47

Manchester accommodation can be in short supply but Man Met guarantee accommodation to all their first years even if it is through clearing. You have to book through a portal and he will get a link via email in the next 72 hours

Man Met will def be in touch, the accommodation is all very near the uni for first years. I think my son was 5 min walk away.

It’s actually his first choice. He checked today and he’d been offered the place on 10th which would have given us a head start but he didn’t think to look.
We will look on the portal, thank you 🙏

Has he accepted the offer? If he has then he should have already received ther booking link. Some students will have been booking since MArch/April so he will have to just accept whatever is still left, but there will be somethig left.

Usually, if it's not the insurance offer you arrange accomodation April/May time. However, we had to switch to private halls for health reasons and arranged accommodation 3 weeks before starting with DS

Were there still halls available then? Or did you need to speak to the uni?

It was a private hall, we had some suggestions of which websites to look at from uni accomodation service.

Met has an accomodation guarantee, your dc just needs to use the portal. It's totally normal for lots of students to not know where they are going untill results day, don't panic!

Accommodation Home

Explore what accommodation we offer, how to make a booking, and what to expect when you move into your halls of residence.

If you don't like what is offered by the university there are loads of private halls. But it's nice to be on campus and sharing with others to help meet people. I would avoid a studio flat if possible for a first year.

somethingischasingme · 14/08/2026 13:08

My dd got accommodation when she went through clearing last year. It looked v basic but she absolutely loved it- flat with 7 students 2 bathroom and a kitchen, student village with shop and laundry. She got all the links as soon as she accepted the place.

MyDarlingRose · 14/08/2026 13:12

If it was his firm choice he’ll have been sent emails to book accomodation months ago. He should look in his junk emails.

ElizaSchuyler · 14/08/2026 13:31

Yes. The link would have arrived within 72 hours of him putting it as his firm choice on ucas.

definitely get him to check junk emails.

JehovasFitness · 14/08/2026 14:20

Uni will contact him and he can sort it. He might have to choose without viewing given the proximity to starting and the demand.

Just seen it was first choice. He probably should have sorted this a while back but hopefully be fine.
