Here we go

OP posts:
BlackBean2023 · 21/05/2026 07:16

my DD has talked about law conversion but I suspect she’ll become a teacher - she’s made for it. Otherwise I could see her working in a museum doing tours for schools - she lights up when she tells other people about historical events; and can’t understand when they glaze over! Grin

@Echobelly, when did DC make their choices in UCAS? You can change your mind within 14 days, I think. Sorry to hear the insider views aren’t great.

Agree with @ComingInByAnsible- can they change? Or perhaps reject and go to Manchester via clearing instead? I hadn’t heard this about Goldsmiths but it’s very scary.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 20/05/2026 20:47

It’s really interesting that four DCs on here are taking History (so far) and all the others are different. Is that unusual do you think? Or is History a super popular degree?

I see that others have replied, and I tend to agree!

for DS it was mainly around the Oxbridge application. He needed a strong subject, about which he is passionate about, to talk about in the ps and then in the interview.

for the other ucas applications he faffed a bit, but came back to Oxford ps/interview in the end.

He looked, and may still change to HPE (history. Politics, economics) at UCL, PPL at Warwick (friend’s daughter has firmed this so we’ll get the skinny!) or something more mixed at UCL (e.g. involving MFL)

but in the end it’s because history is, and has always been, his favourite subject. He would also like to go into the civil service (MI6 or 5) or one of the political quangos. History opens the doors to a lot of careers.

All the best to those taking exams today. Good luck to you all!

They accepted it 14 days ago...😱 14 days starts from day of acceptance email so i guess we've missed it. But have just messaged them to ask when they got acceptance email, if it was the Friday I might just beg them to contact UCAS today and change . Otherwise will ask if they're willing to let me ask if there's any chance at all to change now.

Another history offer holder here for history buff DS who sounds a bit like your DD@BlackBean2023 We try to pay attention he's lecturing us sharing his passion but there might be a little bit of glazing over going on!

Edexcel Politics 1 verdict just in: “very good”. The 24-marker was on Socialism and the State, which we had done a thorough session on together yesterday. Other questions also good though no detail on those yet.

Tebheag · 21/05/2026 12:14

Lovely to read the spreadsheet with DC plans.

We are still no further here. DS could have the lowest grades too after looking at the spreadsheet. DS has a busy couple of days exam today and tomorrow currently either hiding from my nagging or revising at school before afternoon exam.

Good luck to all doing exams this week.

NB I am under the wrong name on this thread, annoyingly. JessyCarr in (inadvertent) disguise!

I’ve had the same feedback. “It couldn’t have been a better written paper”

phew, DD needed that after a History horror on Tues.

Certain subjects at Goldsmiths such as art school they will not let fail. It is dry course dependent.

rhabarbarmarmelade · 21/05/2026 13:41

Anyone nervous about Nottingham, given the huge cuts?

Ventress · 21/05/2026 13:58

I’m so pleased that Politics went well 😊

interesting @rhabarbarmarmelade- do you think Goldsmiths might merge? Like KCL and Cranfield.

They don’t have those grades yet @Tebheag! Best of luck to your son.

Good luck to all who have exams this afternoon and tomorrow!

Ds has scrapped the side of the car down the gate! So annoyed. I’ve told him he needs to work to pay off the bill. Hopefully it’ll just be blending the scrape out rather than a full respray 🤞

Newlease · 21/05/2026 16:07

@Echobelly hope you get this sorted soon! Such a worry along with exam stress.
I can also see many issues with UCAS appln firming the best and then equally good one in insurance, if we apply with grades in hand, then it’s easier to decide
Good to read this discussion on History, I also didn’t know much about the job opportunities. I had a blip with my son when discussing GSCE options, he is choosing Spanish and German, and discussion between History and Geo. only job I could think of was diplomat(which obviously is coming from watching too much TV😬)
kids these days know what they want to do and know what to go for, compared to my days, in different country too
DD had FM today, it was “meh” , was not too bad! Anyone else heard anything?

DS was so happy, all of the questions were hos strongest and favourite areas. Such a relief.

SilverBlue4 · 21/05/2026 16:13

Re FM mine hasn't emerged yet (extra time) but even so must have started late.

OP posts:
pinkdelight · 21/05/2026 16:18

Is that the FM core pure 2 or another paper? DS had the FM algorithms paper (ocr) this pm, which he found tricky in places but "not terrible". Hopefully the grade boundaries are lower as not many people do it relative to some other modules. No more exams till after half-term when he'll finally be on study leave.

AuntyBulgaria · 21/05/2026 16:19

FM core pure paper 2 Edexcel today - it was ok much harder than paper 1 and really long, lots of people did not manage to finish.

gingercat02 · 21/05/2026 16:20

Human geography "fairly sure that went pretty well" whatever that may mean.
He's having a day off tomorrow before cracking on with Germany and WotR.
Good luck for tomorrow everyone and try to enjoy half term and the lovely weather 😊

HereWeAreToday · 21/05/2026 16:23

Me! Dd loved Notts from the first time we visited. I’ve kept my nerve all the way through but really worrying with the latest news.

Sorry - that should have been responding to the Notts post!

Tebheag · 21/05/2026 16:25

@Ventress DS is really hoping for BCC might get CCD.
With his w fast this month is going won't have long till we find out.

DS said the same thing - he seems broadly ok with how he did but said quite a few questions took up more time than the marks warranted and made the timings very tight.

Ventress · 21/05/2026 16:39

I’ve not heard much about Nottingham @HereWeAreToday. I did hear about MFL but nothing else. What is being discussed? Is it because of the awful murders a few years ago?

Really pleased that everyone seems okay with FM2 and Geography 2 today - well done to you all! Not long until half term!

I agree @Newlease. DS would have insured Durham except that the grades are higher than his firm!

diplomat works 😀

he’ll do fine @Tebheag🤞 especially finding out about the apprenticeship later this month. Good luck to him !

I was looking at the grades too, seems so many uni's are looking for the top grades in everything, it's so much pressure on our young people. What do you mean by your no further there? Can you add your Dc to the spreadsheet?

I think (hope) Notts is too big to go under but there will definitely be some cutbacks to courses.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 21/05/2026 16:50

Sorry to hear about the car @Ventress , DS1 is a terror fordoing this to both cars that he's had. I swear he's got the spatial awareness of a hippo. Hope it's not too costly to fix.

DS currently power washing the patio for BBQ on the weekend. He's done one chemistry paper practice today, whined and moaned about how hard it was the whole time so I sent him out to the garden to do some real work. 😁
