Foundation years - queries?

Hi, My DS is thinking of doing a foundation year (he's 20) and has just realised he should have tried harder at school.

Is there any point in doing a foundation year if you:

  • may leave after the first year (as you want to join Royal Marines)
  • May not continue for the rest of the degree
  • May want to come back and do the degree in a few years time - do you need to study where you did the foundation year? & possibly even in a different subject?

Why does he want to do it? If his A levels were not good or relevant maybe an Access course would suit better?

He should only do the foundation year if he is intending to complete his course of study, as rules on progression vary university to university.

He might be better served with an access course, as these tend to be valid for a few years for entry

@LIZS perhaps you are right - I don't know about Access courses, will search.
@AelinAG thank you super helpful comments
