Did you enjoy your Uni subject.

My DD wants to do Maths, probably only because it's her best subject, I don't think there's any great passion there.

I see so many who don't enjoy their Mats degree.

Architecture. Would never repeat it given my time over, I genuinely hate it for multiple reasons, and have made sure my children didn’t even consider it as an option. I don’t know any architects that enjoy their job and wish they could do something else instead (although I’m sure some will). If any of your DC are considering it please persuade them away.

English Literature. Absolutely- loved it and teach Secondary English so use it directly, still a massive reader too.

Why is Architecture so bad? I know it is notorious for a long study/training period and low pay.

I am a retired professor, and career path should be the focus of university education, not what your favorite subject is!!

If she chooses math to what end?

Disagree. Far too early to tell for lots of people and so utilitarian.

I studied Psychology for my first degree. I did a Business Administration degree about 6 years later. I very much enjoyed both. I used Psychology degree everyday as I became a Psychology teacher and I use business admin as I run a small btl property business. I'd do them both again in a heartbeat. I loved my uni days.

Zoology - is definitely do it again. I led expeditions to remote countries and found new species. Incredible lecturers including Richard Dawkins. Studying at Oxford was amazing and helped my career - which is not remotely linked to my subject

Well those two things for a start but over the past 15 years our role has become less respected (everyone thinks they could do the job or generally denigrates architects) but our responsibilities and workloads have increased exponentially with new regulations in planning, building regulations and H&S and more onerous requirements from the regulatory body which is often completely irrelevant to 80% of practicing architects. Pay has gone down if anything and insurance is sky high. For me the joy has completely gone.

Electronics engineering - yes, I would do it again. I never intended to do it, but things went really wrong at A level and I went through cleaning and applied for anything going. Ended up at a “rubbish” university (which was actually very good). Expected to drop out or change courses after the first year but I loved it. Completely surprised me that I would enjoy it considering it was in a very different direction to the way I was going (I have no idea why the uni even accepted me, they most have been desperate for bums on seats - I had originally intended to do sociology!). Can’t deny it was hard work, and several things were a mystery because I had the slightly wrong background so it took a lot of effort on my part to catch up, but it was worth it. Today I have an interesting job, not in pure electronics, but in engineering and R&D developing systems/instruments for bespoke situations but my social science based a levels alongside my surprise degree have been an excellent mix and have made me well rounded. (I definitely do not suggest that anyone intentionally does what I have done, pick something you love or has meaning for a potential career, but sometimes the world surprises us and a radical change of direction can work).

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn thanks for explaining. It does not sound like a good field to go into. A pity, because I think architects are so clever to combine the creative and the hard math/science.

Physiotherapy. Love my job but it’s tough on your body and I’ve had many work related injuries over the years. Tried to sway DD away from it but looks like next year we’ll have a defiant physio student in the house! 🙈 If I had to choose again I’d probably go for radiography.

Graphic Design. Yes, though I didn't use hardly any skills I learned as we went desk top publishing within two years. I learned on the job.
If I was to do it again I do textile design. I didn't know it was a thing back then.

English Literature.
Wish I had taken a more holistic English degree. Love literature still
Has given me lifelong enjoyment. Although I think it's a subject I would have done better at as a mature student. Having life experience to reflect on would have made my reflection and understanding deeper.
