Did you enjoy your Uni subject.

My DD wants to do Maths, probably only because it's her best subject, I don't think there's any great passion there.

I see so many who don't enjoy their Mats degree.

History. I don’t use it in my job but yes, I’d do it again. I’d love to do it again in fact. History has given me so much interest and enjoyment my whole life. My DD1 followed in my footsteps and did a history degree too.

Zuve · 17/01/2025 08:18

I did physics and enjoyed it. I am now learning languages and should done that

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 17/01/2025 08:36

I think careers advice was soooooooooo very very shit in 1980s and 1990s that people just fell into a direction that didn't suit them or had no future.

LunaTheCat · 17/01/2025 08:50

Medicine. I would do it again in a heart . It’s a hard job, stress through the roof, long days, not enough resources to do what you should, horrendous amount paperwork… but it’s my calling… and I am not religious at all!

HEMole · 18/01/2025 09:50

I did pharmacology, which is interesting and which I now teach at a university after many years working in biomedical research. If I had my time again, though, I think I'd do pharmacy to have a professional qualification and opportunities for parallel academic and professional careers. But, most of all, I'd like to have been able to retire early and study something I'm genuinely interested in, like history or philosophy.

It's no different now. It was slightly better about 20 years ago, but the small improvements that had been made were immediately reversed by Lord Snooty Cameron.

I have a Theology degree, a post grad cert and a masters. I would have done a different course at masters level. A profession specific one to get me out of the whole that is teaching.

Soccermumamir · 18/01/2025 10:04

I didn't go to uni decided to travel instead. However my friends went to Uni and none of them are working in a field related to their degree.

Isitasquid · 18/01/2025 10:09

Psychology. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I managed to balance the social aspects of it with neuroscience and could choose BA or BSc when it came to graduating. It's a degree subject with endless possibilities imo.

Jasmin71 · 18/01/2025 10:39

Biology specialising in Cell and Molecular Biology followed by Mphil in research.

Still my favourite subject.

If I had to go again I would choose Psychology with criminology. Or physics with philosophy.

Thank you. I think these reply's are really useful for our kids.
Yes, careers advice is so poor.

I did English as it was my best subject. I wish I’d done something that was more of a challenge at uni - maybe anthropology? But not something I found so easy.

Knowing myself as I do now, I would have liked to have done something in public health.

Hoppinggreen · 18/01/2025 20:19

I did Politics and absolutely loved it BUT if I did a a degree now it would probably be linguistics with a speciality in forensic liguistics - I read a book on it recently and find it fascinating.

blueshoes · 18/01/2025 20:37

Law LLB. Yes I would do it again as I have been practising law my whole career.

Found it easy and interesting (as in 'where have you been my whole life') with a mix of logic, language and rigour that spoke to me. Even the dry subjects like administrative and constitutional law helped make sense of the world to me. Like I was drawing a map in my head.

I wasn't a brilliant student, just 2:1 as opposed to a first. Enjoyed the practical application and wasn't too academic.

GMH1974 · 18/01/2025 20:38

Theology and Religious Studies. No absolute waste of time.

Are people regretting uni choices because of their current salary and whether it narrowed career choice.

Nope. I regret it because it led to a job that destroyed my mental health. I am much happier now I am free of it.

curious79 · 19/01/2025 23:22

Psychology… chose for the love of it… no regrets

equally I think I would have loved law, medicine… lots of interests. My advice would be follow what you find interesting for satisfaction, be cold blooded and do something like finance if it’s about money (Ps. Psychology has been very good money for me)

VeryQuaintIrene · 19/01/2025 23:30

Classics and became a professor in it - yes, 100%!

menopausalfart · 19/01/2025 23:34

I chose to study Archaeology/History. Best years of my life.

SiobhanSharpe · 19/01/2025 23:35

History. I enjoyed it but if I had my time again i would do a modern languages degree in French and Spanish.
(I've got good French because I kept it up after A levels but i'd love to be fluent. )

OhcantthInkofaname · 19/01/2025 23:36

I am a retired professor, and career path should be the focus of university education, not what your favorite subject is!!

If she chooses math to what end?

OttersAreMySpiritAnimal · 19/01/2025 23:39

A very niche stem degree, won't say what because it could be outing. I do work in the field I studied.
I would choose something else if I had my time again, simply because the lack of creativity in what I do is stifling. I think I should've studied architecture.
I should've thought about what I wanted my life to be like and done a degree that facilitated that outcome.

BellissimoGecko · 19/01/2025 23:43

English Language and Literature. And yes. I loved it and would do it again. It's been the foundation for my career.

jclm · 19/01/2025 23:52

I studied sociology which I loved and really had a passion for. It relates to my career path.

If I studied again, I might choose astronomy (although I would struggle) or a difficult language like Russian or Arabic. Easier languages, I feel, are a bit of a waste if you study these at university. It would be quite easy to get a job in the chosen country and do an immersion.

bibliomania · 21/01/2025 16:34

Law. It was fine, played to my strengths, and it seemed attractive to employers. It wasn't a bad choice.

I'd like to have been a doctor, but I wasn't attracted by the contents of a medical degree - I sometimes wonder if I should done it as a means to an end.

If I had the chance to do a degree now out of interest, it would be archaeology.
