Did you enjoy your Uni subject.

My DD wants to do Maths, probably only because it's her best subject, I don't think there's any great passion there.

I see so many who don't enjoy their Mats degree.

Business Studies. Enjoyed the course and it’s been useful in day to day life but I wish I’d done something more vocational with a career based qualification at the end of it.

Cobwebs5 · 16/01/2025 20:33

Thank you. All very useful.

Physics
Def the right choice for me

Maths - there is a huge variety of maths courses that it's likely one or the other will fit your child better

museumum · 16/01/2025 20:39

Applied maths and physics. I didn’t not enjoy it…. but would maybe have enjoyed environmental science or physical geography more. However I’m 100% glad I chose the uni I chose. The course didn’t matter as much.

PermanentTemporary · 16/01/2025 20:39

Speech and language therapy as a mature student. Yes I'd do it again (but glad I don't have to as it was bloody hard work!)

VeneziaJ · 16/01/2025 20:40

Law, and although it enabled me to become a lawyer I wish instead I had studied medieval history. I loved history and did an A level in it but decided to go for a “sensible” option. I am thinking of doing a degree in it now that I have taken early retirement

ScaryM0nster · 16/01/2025 20:42

Started doing Mechanical Engineering.

Swapped after first year to Chemical Engineering.

Enjoyed it. Have liked my jobs. 100% would do again.

If like maths at school then I’d really encourage her to look at engineering. Particularly if also likes physics.

University Maths is nothing like school maths, which might be what she’s interested in. But if it’s more like school maths and the mechanics modules in particular then definitely check out engineering.

kirinm · 16/01/2025 20:42

I did law. It was okay but I'd probably do something different, Maybe history.

coolcahuna · 16/01/2025 20:44

I did French & Economics and would probably chose French and Business If I had my time again. Absolutely loved doing French, it was and is my absolute joy and had the best year out in France as well.

Spondoolie · 16/01/2025 20:49

PPE and no. I’d have done civil or aviation engineering. Definitely would advise vocational

Ifailed · 16/01/2025 21:05

Computer Science in the early 80s, which led to my first job as a programmer and a string of related jobs through the 90s and 00s. Ended up as an IT project/programme manager.
Wouldn't change a bit of it. (apart from some of the cunts I worked with)

ErrolTheDragon · 16/01/2025 21:14

Chemistry. I'd do it again (nearing end of career writing scientific software).

DH was also a chemist, went into a more conventional industry R&D career. He sometimes wishes he'd done something else.

There's a good deal of luck how things pan out, of course.

DD did engineering, she seems to be very much enjoying her job in that field at the moment and her BF likewise.

Ontherocksthisyear · 16/01/2025 21:16

Art History. Didn't lead anywhere apart from being able to access a Master in a different subject. But I loved it nonetheless. Would not change it for the world. Art history is my passion, though.

umdontdothat · 16/01/2025 21:27

Dentistry. It was a very intense course. At the time when I trained, it was a 4 year 1 term degree; so a lot to pack in.
Biol, Chem and Maths A levels.

I did actually enjoy Maths, so maybe I should have done a degree in that.

tobee · 16/01/2025 21:31

English and classics.

I enjoyed doing it but wasn't very good at it. Not sure which is the way to go on that issue. So I liked the 3 years but didn't get a very good degree class and was also from a not well regarded university. 😬

EmeraldDreams73 · 16/01/2025 21:32

English Literature. I loved it and I can't think of anything I'd rather take if I had to do it again. God, I wish I could do it again.

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 16/01/2025 21:34

English and American Literature.

So wish I'd done European Studies with German language.

StasisMom · 16/01/2025 21:36

I did French, German and Spanish and if I could go back, I'd do psychology and criminology I think. Really wish I could!

Axelotl · 16/01/2025 21:38

Biology - specialising in microbiology/genetics.
Don't work in that field anymore but I did find it fascinating and still do to a certain extent, though not enough to want to do a PhD.

TheyNicknamedHerTheBolter · 16/01/2025 21:39

Teaching.
Absolutely not. Never again. Ever.

MaxJLHardy · 16/01/2025 21:39

English. Massively enjoyed it and looking back still can't quite believe a day's work involved sitting in the sun reading poetry.

I did maths at Cambridge in the mid 80s having done maths and FM A level with ease.

I hit a wall. Should have switched to CompSci. Wish someone had suggested it. Only survived because I was able to choose y3 options that didn't build on y2.

I've heard this story so many times, the 'hit a wall' thing. Even amongst brainiacs.
A lot of Maths is building on previous work, which means you go down a narrower and narrower rabbit hole. And if you do hit that wall then you are in real trouble.

I wish I'd done engineering instead. Coming from a girls' school that was hot on academics but useless on carers advice, I didn't even know that such a thing existed.

Doubledded123 · 16/01/2025 21:42

Eng and Italian. Brilliant fun.. had amazing career in Europe.
Would i choose it again, yes, but would've done postgrad

CoodleMoodle · 16/01/2025 21:42

I did Business Management and ABSOLUTELY NOT.

My best subject all through school was ICT. I got the highest overall mark in my year at GCSE, blitzed the coursework, found the exams a doddle, etc.

Then I did an ICT A-level and a business A-level, and for some bizarre reason decided to do Business at uni. I did enjoy Business slightly more than ICT at sixth form, but utterly detested it at uni right from the start. I should've switched course but at the time I thought that meant I was a failure so plodded on regardless.

I have never used it.

I did Sociology and History and really enjoyed it. If I had my time over again I would do Psychology.
