nvq2 vs apprenticeship

Hi,
My son has just passed his GCSE and started nvq2 electrician in college. I am a bit puzzled why if he passed his GCSE (badly but good enough) he did not start an apprenticeship as an electrician? From what I understand nvq2 lasts 2 years does it make sense in his case? All my friends - colleagues told me that in such a case it is a waste of time, that it is better to start an apprenticeship straight away. Can my son stop nvq2 e.g. in a month or 6 months and start his apprenticeship?
Thank Yous in advance

There are no NVQs any more, they should all be Standards within Apprenticeships

Will need a nvq3 to be fully qualified, so will have to do that. And a lot of employers in that trade will prefer an employee to have had on the job apprenticeship training rather than full time college. So not impossible to get a job, but harder

Though it is hard to get an apprenticeship in those trades, they are very sought after

so if you can do an apprenticeship at nvq3 level then 2 years of college and nvq2 is a waste of time

and what do You suggest similar?

No, L2 was designed as entry level and then they progress to L3. L2 isn't a waste of time if no prior skills in that area.
However what exavtly they are offering because the terminology of NVQ should be obsolete now. They should all be Standards within Apprenticeships
