I've just realised that the year 12 2023/2024 thread is full - oops! - last message on 16 August - don't know if someone started another continuation thread but I can't see it. This coming year DS1 does A levels and university applications, DS2 will be in his GCSE year.

If there is a thread already started please let me know.

TBH DC1 is a bit flat. Nowt serious, but she's really sad about leaving junior conservatoire and our borough youth orchestra. She's been at both much longer than college (Youth Orchestra since she was 8!) and so leaving has had much more of an impact on her than finishing college. I think she's missing routine and a sense of belonging to somewhere. She's also not been able to pick up many shifts at work.

But we're on our family holiday next week, and then she's got a weekend away with some orchestra mates, so hopefully she'll pick up a bit.

Yes this is ds. He can’t cope without a routine.

MonkeyTennis34 · 17/07/2025 08:45

DS2 is still looking for a summer job…..
He got his student finance details yesterday.
Oh blimey, that’s Christmas cancelled.

Earlymornyawn · 17/07/2025 19:12

DC spending most days with friends, we have just come back from hols and are thinking about going away for a short break just before uni. No jobs on the horizon but will prob let them enjoy the hols before uni. They are sad to be leaving school and have been in to volunteer.

DC going for a transition day at uni soon and has confirmation of funding.

@UnimaginableWindBird my friend’s DC did art foundation at Bournemouth and really enjoyed it. I know it can be difficult for transport from the north of England though, Hope that you find a uni/course that DC is happy with.

HippyChickMama · 29/07/2025 11:08

Getting nervous for results day here! Ds has his 18th birthday two days before so I’m hoping his nerves won’t put a dampener on his birthday celebrations

Changes17 · 30/07/2025 10:54

DS very much not talking about results - refuses to assume he’s going to uni at all. I don’t think the exams went particularly badly, but he doesn’t want to take it for granted.

I think it will be ok, but, fingers crossed.

Changes17 · 30/07/2025 10:55

Hope your DS gets to celebrate his birthday without too many nerves, @HippyChickMama!

PhotoDad · 30/07/2025 11:50

DS also turns 18 soon (this weekend!) but is postponing his party until after results day!

PennywisePoundFoolish · 30/07/2025 11:59

DS2 seems utterly unfazed and optimistic. I'm hoping his expectations are met as the crash will be awful. He's got his DSA assessment online next week, and he's adamant he can do that independently.

He's generally cheerful and still making good use of his gym membership. He's not very clear on his Student Finance so I've nagged reminded him to check the status today

Hope the August-borns get to enjoy their 18ths fully.

jamimmi · 30/07/2025 13:15

Dd July born has started to show some signs of worry now are back from holiday, think she was ticking off exams, 18th ,holiday then .... shes not optimistic can feels shes lost her ability to judge how exams went. Currently refusing to discuss other options. I've booked the 14th & 15th of work in case I'm needed. She and her Dad alone would be a disaster if it's gone wrong

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 30/07/2025 14:42

Happy Birthday to those celebrating soon! DC1 is desperate for the wait to be over so she can make some concrete plans. I've also booked 14/08 off work so I can support her if needed.

jamimmi · 30/07/2025 17:19

@TheTurn0fTheScrew I'm glad.im not alone in giving up a day's leave. Did it for ds and spent the day drinking wine in the sun. Not so optimistic this time.

mumonthehill · 30/07/2025 17:41

I booked leave as well. Ds is still not showing much panic but definitely wants it over. We rarely see him as he is either at work, at the beach or away with his sport which he is doing country trials for. He is still not telling us if he will go or not!!!

Earlymornyawn · 30/07/2025 19:35

DC had a nightmare about result’s day last week! I have got the morning off to go into school with DC but I get bare min holiday entitlement so didn’t have any spare leave to take.

Good luck to everyone and Happy Birthday to all celebrating birthdays 🥳.

BonjourCrisette · 30/07/2025 20:48

DD is starting to feel a bit nervous too. It's so soon, isn't it? Feels like no time since they finished exams.

GingerPussInBoots · 31/07/2025 00:21

My dc had a nightmare about results day last night too

Why is he unsure if he will go ?

im finding my mind is starting to swing towards results day
been doing pretty well with distractions but its creeping into my mind more now

jamimmi · 31/07/2025 17:59

It's slowly creeping up, 2 weeks today which is scary. I keep gerring clearing spam on Facebook which isn't helping either

mumonthehill · 31/07/2025 18:07

@GingerPussInBoots not quite sure really. He has talked about a year out and the debt aspect of uni really worries him. The reality is that if he wants to continue his sport uni is the best place to do it. I do not mind really as he is very sensible and independent student I know he will be ok. Just trying not to push either way but secretly I would like him to go. If he does not Nottingham then It think he will not go.

legosnowqueen · 31/07/2025 20:45

Nerves are kicking in here too. DS has had a good summer, pleased to see his mates back from uni & working in a restaurant job which he enjoys. But his health problems have continued which has taken the shine off. Inspired by @TheTurn0fTheScrewI’ve just booked 14th off work. I think if DS misses his first two choices he will look at clearing but will be fussy - which is fair enough with costs etc. I am taking him to Rome for few days a week or so later, which we’re both looking forward to. It will then be a mad rush to sort him out!

jamimmi · 31/07/2025 21:00

@legosnowqueen I think they are all getting fussier. I cant blame them. Dd will be happy with lancaster or nottingham but I think would reject lancasters foundation course if offerd as she is currently at the 6th form it partners with. She may then possibly/maybe look at clearing or resits who knows. Rome is fabulous went a few years ago. Book collosium tickets now it you haven't already and it's your thing. Dd and I have a chritmes break booked to London for the ballet whatever the outcome.

Earlymornyawn · 01/08/2025 19:10

@GingerPussInBoots sorry to hear your DC is having nightmares too.

DC will only go to one uni so if they don’t get in there they won’t be going. Went to a transition day yesterday, which they really enjoyed.

@legosnowqueen and @jamimmi lovely to have something to look forward to.
We are going to book a city break just before DC starts uni, possibly Krakow.

Good luck to everyone on the 14th, need to try and stop thinking about it!

PennywisePoundFoolish · 04/08/2025 15:24

DS2 has crashed quite badly. He'd been a bit off the last week and we has the DSA assessment today. He cried a lot. The assessor was really kind and autistic himself.

DS2 agreed to go back on antidepressants, so I'm waiting on a call with the GP.

I think the reality of going, plus nerves over the results have got to him.

Hope other young people are holiday up OK

BonjourCrisette · 04/08/2025 16:47

Oh no, your poor son. I hope the antidepressants help him feel better. Do you think he might feel less awful once the results are in? I do think the waiting is the absolute worst part. DD is also feeling pretty anxious.

jamimmi · 04/08/2025 17:17

@PennywisePoundFoolish your poor son, sounds like it's been a while coming. The DSA assessors are in general lovely. I do wonder if alot.have the issue being assessed. Dd's was dyslexic so very much got her dyslexia issues. Her stuff arrived today but we are not touching it in case we need to return it after results day. I hope he feels better with medication soon. At least he crashed at home where you could.support him

PennywisePoundFoolish · 04/08/2025 18:03

Thanks @BonjourCrisette @jamimmi

It's transpired he messed up his accommodation application a bit, so it's been eating away at him. This is a very DS2 thing.

I've sent them an email explaining the crisis etc and hopefully they'll let me know what, if anything we can do.

I'm hoping as he did fill out the disability document correctly it will be salvageable. And obviously it's a conditional offer, so nothing is set in stone.

I think the DSA questions around socialising really got to him, as he's not got any close friends. He's got very into going to the gym, but that's a very solitary thing. I just hope if he does manage to go to university, he makes a friend or 2.

He responded well to the medication last time, and the psychiatrist and I did try and encourage him to wait a while longer before coming off it. But he was adamant and old enough to make such decisions. He accepts he needs to stay on it a good 6 months this time.
