Hello, My son, Year 12, is not fulfilling his potential and is predicted B computer science C maths/further maths and E physics. I understand B is 40 points, E is 16 points. Does maths and further count as 32 points or 64 points? He wants to study maths or computer science at Uni and the open days are soon. Realistically, what Universities would accept him to study maths (perhaps with another subject) or computer science with these predicted grades so we can arrange visits. Thank you for your help :)

If he’s sitting A level maths. And A level further maths separately. Then that’s two A levels with two predicted grade Cs.

Is he likely to do better in the real exams? He can apply now and if he does much better go through clearing. Or take a gap year and apply with results in hand.

With those grades he will certainly have choices, although lower tariff ones. He could also look at Foundation Years

Could he drop physics? Might pull up his other grades. FM is often taken as a fourth but it is an A level in its own right and I know students who have done Maths, FM and one other who have done v well.

Uni is certainly available with those grades. I don’t know about subjects offered (hastily adding that after I advised badly on another thread!) but I would suggest unis in the tier of NTU, UWE, maybe Leicester (where my dd went with BCC), Sheffield Hallam, Edge Hill, Leed Beckett, maybe Swansea? Does he want city, campus?

Put his subject and grades into whatuni.com and it will make suggestions of unis that will take with those grades.

I agree with dropping the E subject to concentrate on getting the others higher

I would have thought he would be better to drop physics then hopefully grades in other 3 will go up a bit and Maths and FM are separate so both count.

Have a look at Portsmouth.

Thank you so much everyone for your replies - they have all been super helpful. His sixth form organised open days and he is now saying he wants to study engineering. We are waiting for his mock results and will also go to open days. TBH I think I have been putting my head in the sand / avoiding this (I feel sad at the thought of him leaving home) however this is about him not me and this thread has really helped me think about his options and how I can best support him.THANK YOU EVERYONE. 😀
