GCSEs are over and we are beginning the next stage. Let's hope it's a bit less stressful than this summer has been! All welcome to discuss, share experiences and support each other as our children move into Y12/BTECs/apprenticeships and start a new phase.

Back on Monday here too. Dd is doing more revison cards and worrying that this week is complicated by a show she's in and alot of rehearsal. Nothing to do with college. Had mock.in November that wer OK more after Feb half term. It was nice to have an exam free Christmas. Good luck to those with exams next week

thewalrus · 07/01/2024 08:11

Happy new year, everyone!
Seem to have gone back very early - on Jan 3rd here - so DD already settled back in. She's about to turn 17, so last few days have been busy with organising driving lessons (7am on a Monday morning - brutal!), booking the theory test etc. She's the youngest of her friend group, and super-keen to get started.
Hope the restart goes well for people tomorrow, and wishing luck to all those about to start exams. Nothing like that here, thankfully.

And January is just the worst time for getting out of bed too, @Letskeepgoing. I think it just has to become a habit. I read something recently about optimistic timing - which struck a chord with me, because I always think things will take less time than they do. One trick was to have an earlier thing to do - so even if you are late for the first thing you are still on time for the second thing.

Can’t find the piece I was reading but here’s another I just found which seems to have some useful tips: https://www.stylist.co.uk/health/mental-health/how-to-be-on-time-lateness-timekeeping/826659

Yeah, that makes sense. He says he gets in the shower and thinks he has loads of time and then the time just dissapears!

@Letskeepgoing does he have adhd? It’s a classic symptom the inability to keep focused to be organised and be on time as you have described or it could just be a teenager! My youngest is 12 and autistic but there’s huge overlaps with adhd we have now realised as she really struggles with any form of self organisation and especially getting up and out the house. At his age is there an element of let him fail and miss the bus and deal with the consequences? It’s a hard one as they do need a lot more life scaffolding around them. Maybe worth looking up some techniques to organise adhd kids.

He is on that pathway. He has asd and add traits. He also has ocd so it's really tough for him but the organisation and time keeping is just so poor.
I am so stressed by the time I get to work and it'd really getting me down having to get up really early trying to get him going. He loves his courses he's taking and is genuinely annoyed with himself that he is like this.

Happy New Year! I hope everyone’s DC got the chance for some rest, relaxation and revelry over the Christmas period.

Good luck to all with mocks, exams and assessments. DC1’s will be at the end of Feb. I actually think it will be good for her to have some proper assessments, as feedback so far has been of the positive-but-vague variety, and having something more concrete might help her focus a bit more.

In other news, she’s booked on a three night MFL trip where the teacher has only booked them the tiny underseat carry-on bag. She’s not one for packing light, so this will be interesting Grin.

Ok so i need some advice. Ds is in a new school so do not know the teachers. He has 2 teachers for biology, one is the head of biology and is very good, the other one is not teaching very well at all, today she had the cutting triangles to look like a heart with no explanation really. We have parents evening at the end of the month, how do I bring this up? The kids have gently flagged it and i have encouraged ds to do this again. In his old school I knew the teachers well But not sure now when i do not know this one at all, do not want to get this conversation wrong.

MoFoFlo · 10/01/2024 16:29

Anyone else’s DC waiting on re-sit results tomorrow? DD felt like her English exams went well in November, so hopefully she’s done enough to pass this time around. She’s had to keep going to English lessons even after the exams and it doesn’t sound like they’ve done much.

Changes17 · 10/01/2024 16:39

I think I’d keep it very specific, @mumonthehill. Maybe say there’s been a few times your DD hasn’t quite understood something - is there somewhere she should be looking (eg online/a textbook) to double check her understanding. Then you’re giving DD a useful resource but not undermining the teacher too much.

Changes17 · 10/01/2024 16:41

Good luck for the results @MoFoFlo & DD. Will be good to free up more time in her week!

mumonthehill · 10/01/2024 16:48

@Changes17 thanks. I think be specific is a good call. DS and his classmates have already had a brief chat with the head of biology but not sure what was said. Ds is saying it is exhausting having to redo the lesson once he gets home. In his old school i knew the teachers well enough to have this conversation but feel out of my depth in this new situation!

Changes17 · 10/01/2024 18:20

@mumonthehill Hope it goes well

Hopeforb · 10/01/2024 23:32

@Letskeepgoing my Ds is same in organising. Time keeping is not too bad but getting him out of bed even when he is awake is difficult. On ASD and I have strong feeling that Ds has ADHD which CAMHS has ruled out! @Changes17 thank you for the link. I will try it. @MoFoFlo good luck for tomorrow

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 11/01/2024 07:48

Good luck @MoFoFlo - keeping fingers crossed for your DD

thewalrus · 11/01/2024 08:43

@MoFoFlo Wishing your DD lots of luck today too.

MoFoFlo · 11/01/2024 09:02

She passed! Got a 5 which she’s really happy with.

She’s got to replace one of the two weekly English lessons with something from the college’s enrichment programme. She’ll probably choose something sporty.

Changes17 · 11/01/2024 09:21

Hooray! That’s fantastic. Congratulations to your DD!

BonjourCrisette · 11/01/2024 09:31

Brilliant, well done to your DD, @MoFoFlo!

Super news - well done to your DD @mofoflo. She must be thrilled at getting that time freed up as well as the achievement itself.

thewalrus · 11/01/2024 10:10

Great news, @MoFoFlo ! Congratulations to her.

Monstermunchy · 11/01/2024 10:54

Excellent news for your daughter @MoFoFlo - something sporty sounds like a great alternative

mumonthehill · 11/01/2024 13:48

@MoFoFlo well done!

SummerChilling · 11/01/2024 18:58

Great news @MoFoFlo and a relief for her too.
