My son has just received his first year of Level 3 BTEC Art and Design grade and it is a pass. He is very upset and unsure whether even if he works harder next year because of the marking system will it be possible to achieve a merit or distinction overall for the final year. He is autistic and it is difficult to get the information from him so I am confused by it all. His goal is to go to university.

Hi, my DD got a pass in Btec Level 3 childcare for the exam element, however, I am led to believe that she can retake this exam unit. I'm afraid I don't know anything about Art and Design was it an exam unit your DS got a pass in. Btec grading is confusing I'm not sure how the overall mark is calculated from the exam and course work.

It all goes together at the end of the 2 yrs to form the overall mark. There is a btec calculator online which translates it all into ucas points.
all is far from lost for him. He absolutely can improve overall mark next year.

it is confusing though- at one point just before the last exams ds had lost all hope . He came out with 3 merits and got the course of his choice. So tell him to keep plodding on. Also bear in mind that a lot of courses offer foundation years now if his marks aren’t quite good enough for the 3 year degree.

I would try to find the spec for the course on the Pearson (I assume) website. From the spec you should be able to work out how the final grade is calculated.

Also, from looking at the spec it might help him understand better what the criteria are for Merit and Distinction in individual units so he might be better able to meet them.

e.g. Is it this one? https://qualifications.pearson.com/en/qualifications/btec-international-level-3/art-and-design.html#%2Ftab-ExtendedDiploma
