So you know when you have one of those most embarassing moments and you wish in that moment, the ground would open up and swallow you so you never appear again? I feel like that happened with me but sadly im still here 😂

Im doing a Teaching assistant course in college. Im in my 30s and decided to go into it and see if i like it, and im so glad i did, I absolutely love it so far.

fast forward towards the end of the course (a few weeks ago), i had my assessment / observation where the college tutor comes into the school and assesses you whilst we complete some activities with the children.

I had prepared maths english and ict activities. i was SO SO SO nervous. we used a large classroom which was meant to be empty, sadly 2 other teaching assistants needed the room at the same time so sat at the back of the room (still close / quiet enough for them to see and hear me in my activitiy etc. so i was extra nervous.
When doing a maths sum, one of the children came up to the board to complete it but got it wrong, i decided to have the group of children do it together. Whilst i was doing it, i froze up. my hands were shaking and i had the answers infront of me but i couldn’t get it right or do it again cause i was so nervous 😂
My college tutor asked me if my hands were shaking and i said yes - she said to leave it and to move onto the next one (i knew the answer, i had worked them all out before the activity with the working out etc so i know it was correct on paper) when it came to do it on the board i couldn’t do it.

I was soooooo embarrassed- imagine trying to teach simple maths to kids and just looking like you can’t do it yourself 😂
It was long division and multiplication or goodness sake 😂
Oh everytime i think about it i just want to cringe so bad. My college tutor was laughing it off saying she’s seen it happen to so many people its normal but im thinking she’s just tryna make me feel better 😂

please tell me this is normal
or is it time to go back and do maths again myself 😂

thank you,
An embarassed mum ☠️

normal response to observation

Tookeffort81 · 27/04/2023 14:11

The examiner actually asked if your hand was shaking?

Tookeffort81 · 27/04/2023 14:12

Your tutor sounds highly inexperienced

MumOf2Here · 27/04/2023 14:13

She did indeed

What on earth are you on about

if you see a hand shaking, you don’t ask in the middle of assessment whether it is or not. In fact, inappropriate to ask in any scenario unless you’re actively wanting someone to feel uncomfortable

MumOf2Here · 27/04/2023 14:14

she really is. she’s brilliant.

She asked, during an assessment “is your hand shaking”? In front of children.
Would you ask this question knowing someone in middle of assessment and very likely nervous?

the question just makes one feel uncomfortable and it’s so unnecessary

MumOf2Here · 27/04/2023 14:17

I saw it as her being concerned at the time more than anything personally, as she told me to move on. But i can see how it may make people feel more uncomfortable if everyone knows they’re nervous now

Exactly

it’s like saying “are you twitching?” “Are you chewing you lip with nerves”?

it shows inexperience to me. With a dollop of thoughtlessness.

and in front of children too. Way to make someone feel small
