Thread 33 - Lovely Jubbly Jubilee Break, then back to Exams

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 27/05/2022 17:10

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board. Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future?

Thanks @Monkey2001 I didn't think he could miss one out. I do have the print out from school. He should be grateful he only has 2 for history.

Seeline · 13/06/2022 12:33

@singingstones thank you - yes I know what you mean about body clock issues. I am trying to make sure we still eat an evening meal together as I think it is nice for DD to connect once a day, but she has often only just had lunch which means she really doesn't want the nice healthy evening meal, and then ends up snacking late in the evening....

Delphigirl · 13/06/2022 12:35

DS is back - pleased with chemistry 1 so HURRAH!
snacks - choc, crisps, fancy m&s choc biscuits, pie master pies, m&s jelly worms….

Isthisjustnormal · 13/06/2022 12:42

My two both have a treat snack bowl which they can take from after they’ve done one block of revision (this is not policed!) Little choc bars; flapjack things; j2Os/ treat drinks; little individual
sweet bags; nuts/nice dried fruit; sometimes fresh fruit; tunnocks tea cakes; dd’s has cool Korean snacks; Ds has wierd tangy/strong sweets.

Dd has a rather posh Emma Bridgewater biscuit tin which she fills with (conversely cheap) Jammy Dodgers and Party Rings for revision snacks.

Cheers would also feature , if she could get hold of cool Korean snacks easily she would no doubt indulge!

@Delphigirl Congrats! What board is your DD? Mine is OCR and not a happy girl...

Alsoplayspiccolo · 13/06/2022 12:52

Maths gcse finished here too - Edexcel higher, and he seems happy with how it went.

Party rings and pink wafers got a good reception here too! For DS1 I used to make bakewell tarts but in general as DS2's body is a temple he would generally rather have a protein shake.

HarrietDVane · 13/06/2022 12:54

DD is out of French and much happier than she was about the Spanish. Phew! Some of the questions were 'a little weird' but on the whole she feels it went well.

Hope others' exams have gone well.

mummyinbeds · 13/06/2022 12:54

Revision treats here are choc ices, yoghurt, cereal at 2am, and cheap and nasty cuppa soups.

Just got a text from DD - DS still being a #@*# . He's going to his gf's after school do she can't have a lift (or have a driving lesson with me) and she can get the school bus home. I should point out the car is mine and neither of them have a right decide who uses it when 🤷

Text from DS to say French was hard but they all thought the same so he's not too concerned. No comments from him on the 6th form common room sibling bust up 😂

Ooh @OrangeCinnamonCroissant i also need to sort out the family 18th for dd. Afternoon tea is a good idea! Although maybe not for the younger kids?

Good luck everyone!

If you mean young as in under 10.. We had an afternoon tea in a cafe for her 9/10th birthday (can't remember) they had squash in teapots ! The sandwiches were quite simple and lots of cake, crisps and sausage roll action was going on.

Chocolate pretzels, twirls, ice cream Mars bars, pizza, posh crisps, strawberries with Greek yoghurt, bacon sandwiches, strawberry pencils , cookies. Body clock also askew, but we have an evening meal together and trying to keep those pretty safe. We had such issues with her food and weight at first that we had a dietitian and food supplements. She told us not to worry about healthy eating, just to get her eating. She has expanded her range since, but it is easy for her to lose her appetite and very hard to get it reestablished, so sugar it is.

Good luck.to all sitters today

We have a Sociology today too, I think we are all different boards ? Eduqas for us😁

Music tomorrow the final English Lit next week...celebratory meal after.

Plans for 18 family party in MIL Garden coming along well. Afternoon tea delivered to save on stress 😜

I didn't know you were Eduqas!

That's what I teach and AoC's DD does.

Piggywaspushed · 13/06/2022 13:25

Eduqas paper was fair today for sociology - a question on Weber but easily sidestepped.

It seems I thought for most of Dds A level that she was OCR for some reason ! 🙄😂

Dd fairly happy she didn't want 'age' to come up and was happy with the 'gender' question. We shall see.

Wheresthebeach - my ds has just finished paper 1 Chemistry, OCR and perhaps like your dd, didn't feel it went particularly well. He answered some of it with confidence but didn't have time for one six marker and felt shaky in some other areas. To be honest though he went in underprepared. I have been nagging him since mocks ended in January to knuckle down and start revising again, but he just went through the motions from Feb to April to shut me up (he would sit down to revise but admits that he didn't properly focus) and he didn't really start getting productive until the Easter break. That isn't enough time to do justice to two science A levels and pyschology, unless you have an eidetic memory I guess. Ah well ....

Wheresthebeach · 13/06/2022 13:43

@LimitIsUp Thanks - DD seems to think one 6 marker wasn't on the AI, but obviously they said all content could be covered... Found the multiple choice hard too...isn't in tears, but isn't happy.

sazzy5 · 13/06/2022 13:50

My DS found the Edexcel chem ok, but he finds paper 1 the easiest. Just glad he is more than half way through his exams now.

AnneOfCleavage · 13/06/2022 13:55

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn ExtremelyDedicated Edexcel History here too. Just one last paper next Wednesday to complete then it's all over. Just told DD that AQA History only has 2 papers and she was gobsmacked - do they also do an NEA coursework element ICanBeWhatIWant?

We also have a snack tub and it's full of those mini snacks: choc fingers, penguin bites, iced gems, party rings etc as well as pringles and other crisps. I also have fridge snacks like satays and dairylea dunkers but I pop up with some cut up fruit to counter balance the crap and she also eats with us every evening so gets a good homecooked meal.

I hope your DD has got on okay today Zebra and all the best for the upcoming op. Fingers crossed you stay well. You've got a lot on your plate at the mo.

A HUGE thank you goes out to @Piggywaspushed for her help and support with DD and her sociology teacher nightmares. Her sociology journey is now over and she is relaxing in her room.

I was convinced i would be snowy white from all the stress of these last few months but thankfully not although I may not have any nails left waiting for the 18th August. Lots of her friends are having their results posted as they are away all summer so on the one hand she's relieved if she's messed up no one will know on the day at school but on the other hand no one will be there to celebrate with if they go her way. Thinks she's past caring at the moment now though as rest is more important to her after a restless nights' sleep and tears yesterday for today's sociology exam. She managed to answer everything with she hopes enough knowledge but you can never tell what gets a mark and what doesn't depending on who is marking.

Now a long gap until last History paper next Wednesday. Am crossing everything that the train strike is resolved as booked tickets weeks ago for the 24th returning on the 25th so we can get to our destination but can't return. Not sure how long to wait until to get a refund and make alternative plans as the train is the better option - DD has won a huge award and it's the black tie dinner to celebrate. Also have non refundable accommodation which was risky but took a gamble. Can't return on 26th as it's her 18th party that is booked and paid for. I know it's a small fry problem as it's more stressful for students taking exams on those days affected so i feel for all involved.

Good luck to all taking exams this week and to the nervous parents in the background metaphorically holding their hands in the exam hall :-)

AnneOfCleavage · 13/06/2022 14:02

Cross posted with piggy so just read your post and that your DD also does eduqas Orange - glad she felt it went well. DD answered everything so fingers crossed it was enough. Yep, Weber definitely side stepped here Piggy lol. DD has never got on with him so was glad the other question was better for her to answer.

crazycrofter · 13/06/2022 14:13

Sounds like a mixed bag so far today, but at least they’ve got another one out the way.

Ds’ report from GCSE Maths was the same as pretty much every exam he’s done - ‘easy 7 at least!’ ‘But ds did you finish the exam?’ ‘Nah but should be fine!’

He has only finished about 2 exams so far but is still supremely confident. I honestly have no idea what to expect in August!

Dd’s only required snacks are Ben and Jerry’s ice cream tubs! Easy but not cheap! Ds hoovers anything and everything up.

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 13/06/2022 14:42

Ahh yes thanks @Piggywaspushed i think it was you that suggested Sociology as a good A Level for DD - she loved it and went well with the Musicology side of her Music A level and the with English Lit too Helped lots with her EPQ (feminism in Musical Theatre). @AnneOfCleavage Dd thinks it is weird that's it for Sociology now. No plans for results day yet as not sure what happens/how/when at the college. It would be nice for her to get them open in the morning online.

Computer Science for us this afternoon which no-one else has mentioned at all so must be very unpopular. It is the systems side of it which DS hates as well.

crazycrofter · 13/06/2022 14:59

I think @Zebracat was helping with computer science revision yesterday @ChristopherTracy !
