Thread 33 - Lovely Jubbly Jubilee Break, then back to Exams

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 27/05/2022 17:10

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board. Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future?

Migrating to this thread!

DS won't take a day off . I really have no idea what he will do with himself when exams are finished! Watch test matches on telly I guess.

crazycrofter · 28/05/2022 19:55

Does he work every day of the week @Piggywaspushed ? Would he come out with you if you arranged to do something one day next week?

I'm slightly stressing that DD’s 18th on Wed will be a bit rubbish - or at least the bit that involves us. I did her a photobook but it’s probably not going to arrive on time, I just ordered something else on Amazon prime which said delivery by 6th June?! Can’t understand why it’s so slow, the bank holidays are at the end of the week 😬She’s already had her Harry Styles tickets and we’re paying for her meal and drinks in the evening with friends, plus we’re going for a meal at lunch time but none of that seems very 18th-y 🤔

HarrietDVane · 28/05/2022 19:58

@Piggywaspushed, I have a DD who is exactly the same. I suspect she'll start pre-reading for university immediately after her last exam! I just hope all their hard work is rewarded!

ProggyMat · 28/05/2022 20:14

Thanks for the new thread @OrangeCinnamonCroissant and @singingstones for Sterling work, as always, on our list!
DD has enjoyed a lovely jubbly few days with her equally so LJ boyfriend who has been up for a visit.
She’s working at the pub tonight then revising for the next two exams ( clash) on 6th June.
At that point that’s one A level done and dusted- Ancient History- and she’ll have completed half of her papers!!

Wheresthebeach · 28/05/2022 20:29

crazy those tickets are a wonderful present and I’m sure the lunch will be fab.

Piggywaspushed · 28/05/2022 20:32

That sounds like a great 18th!

DS does work every day, yes, bit obviously no school now. He'll watch some sport, go for runs go to band.

I am in awe of his intrinsic motivation . I worked hard too at school but my school was also very sociable so lots of events to attend.

Shimy · 28/05/2022 21:18

Found you all!

Apologies to all who reached out on the previous thread that I didn't get back to. I suddenly disappeared mid conversation because so much is going on and demanding my attention at home. I felt really bad when I checked the thread and there were quite a few questions or advice being given. Someone posted a really helpful note on DSA and giving uni access to your records and I wanted to say thank you that it's been noted now but lost the page. The fact I'm working on a terrible iPad that keeps dying mid typing also doesn't help.

@Cantonet So sorry to hear your DS is still suffering. Can he revise without the medication? DS was able to do this when he was younger. He only used the medication during term time. However, it meant he had to go through readjusting to his meds again every beginning term which was horrendous.

So I suggested how about he has a much lower dose of his meds during the hols so that he feels more himself and less 'under the influence' but still got it in his system so that when term restarts he doesn't have the awful side effects. CAMHS though this was a brilliant idea since some dc use the meds 7 days a week. This worked for him all round until he came off it.

crazycrofter · 28/05/2022 21:33

I hope she thinks it’s ok! She’s actually got three back to back events in the evening with friends - a catch up with her primary school bestie at 4, then a meal with friends from her secondary school, then cocktails with new school friends so I think that bit sounds fine! 😂

It’s good that he’s motivated @piggywaspushed and it doesn’t sound like he gets stressed either. DD’s best friend has been working so hard and knew her stuff, but had a panic attack in her first exam and missed a whole question out. I feel so sorry for her.😢

Dd went to the uni library today in the end with friends and is still there now so seems to have found her revision groove.

Heifer · 28/05/2022 21:47

@crazycrofter - how about getting your DD some small bits to open too? makeup, facemasks etc (not ££) make up a little hamper. Also anything that you know you will be buying her for uni, but some now and wrap it up :-)
The days sounds like it will be great fun so I'm sure she will be happy.

crazycrofter · 28/05/2022 21:59

Yes I was thinking that was what was missing @heifer. I’ll have to have a mooch round the shops on Monday as it looks like prime isn’t going to be next day at the moment.

Dd is the same. She doesn't know how to switch off any more. She got in last night this morning at 4am but was still up and revising by 10am.

when do you stop worrying about your children driving in unfamiliar places?

I'd love to know this answer but I think it may be 'never'!

Delphigirl · 28/05/2022 23:55

Aha! Found you all!

Volterra · 29/05/2022 03:51

thanks for the new thread and list Orange and Singingstones and belated welcome to Chakra.

cantinet I’m so sorry your DS having a rough time, DD couldn’t get on with the meds and lost a good few months of time at university really. She has given up on them now.

Crazycrofter that all sounds lovely. Biggest hit for DD’s 18th something from when she was little , she burst into tears when she realised what it was bless her.

DS seems on good form which after seeing him unwell for ages I am appreciating every moment.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 29/05/2022 11:00

crazy, your 18th presents sound fab, but if you want an extra idea, we made DD an 18th survival pack - vanilla vodka, fancy coffee, ibuprofen for the inevitable hangover, a “vintage” 2003 T shirt, a book called What They Don’t Teach You at School, face masks, posh chocolate, and other little bits and pieces.
Less than £50 but really appreciated.

Oblomov22 · 29/05/2022 11:02

Crazy I quite fancy the Heifer hamper and the Piccolo survival pack myself!

Wheresthebeach · 29/05/2022 11:57

Those are all great ideas! Am going to do the survival hamper for DD in July.

Heifer · 29/05/2022 12:54

love the survival pack and also the present from when she was little, wish I had thought of thought when DD was 18.

EspeciallyDistracted · 29/05/2022 13:44

@Shimy it was me who mentioned that telling the uni about DSA was optional, we have told DS's but as he's been at a special school for years and plays disability sport our default is people knowing but it is definitely good to have the choice.

icanbewhatiwant · 29/05/2022 14:02

I think Ds is having a rest from revision too. They went to the pub after the exam Thursday. He did go into school Fri pm. but wasn't in long. I think he spent most of Saturday asleep and went to an 18th party in the eve. He wouldn't ask dh to collect him late, so he drove, he knows not to drink anything when he's driving. As I'm still banished to my bedroom I can't see what any of them are up to. It's 2pm and I'm sure neither of them are up. No one else has covid symptoms. We are running low on tests now. I think there's one more box. I'm sure they can be bought somewhere. Would rather use the proper nhs ones though.

crazycrofter · 29/05/2022 15:37

Thanks @Alsoplayspiccolo some great ideas! I actually ordered a vintage 2004 T-shirt yesterday but it might not come in time, but I can look for stuff locally.

NCTDN · 29/05/2022 16:25

@icanbewhatiwant where in the country are you? I've loads of lfts.

EspeciallyDistracted · 29/05/2022 16:33

You can get them from Boots or Superdrug and they will be as good as the NHS ones, all in-vitro diagnostic devices are regulated and must meet specific standards.

icanbewhatiwant · 29/05/2022 16:36

@NCTDN thanks for offer....I'm in Suffolk I've just ordered some from Superdrug. Almost £10 for 5. Then I accidentally ordered 2 boxes. Though apparently dh can hand one back when he collects and ask for a refund. I might have both boxes. Depends whether I'm negative in the next day or so. DH is making a fuss now as he's got a parish council meeting at 5pm he's put the roast in the oven, potato's par boiled etc. Now he wants me to do the rest while he's at his meeting. I don't want to give covid to everyone else, especially dh. I think ds2 might get a lesson on how to finish a roast dinner via FaceTime 😂

NCTDN · 29/05/2022 16:53

I'm impressed he's done a roast dinner tbh. If that was our house it would be either a takeaway, a ready meal or something that goes from the freezer into the oven Confused

icanbewhatiwant · 29/05/2022 17:05

@NCTDN we had chicken burgers in buns last night, that's not healthy. Fish and chips from the van that stops once a week the day before, but the dc's don't eat them, so he cooked pizza for ds3 and ds2 cooked himself something. I didn't eat Thursday. So I think the dc's just had pasta. I ordered a chicken with the weekly shop. Dh asked this morning if he had to cook it. I said yes...we need a healthy dinner. He's been upstairs and taken a basket full of laundry too. He huffs a bit though. He doesn't usually do much indoors, he's retired, he expects me to do it all, plus work. So I'm sniggering to myself. I went downstairs earlier, it's a bit of mess down there. I found it very difficult to just walk away. But I told myself no one will come in anyway.

Yes the Superdrug tests are the floflex tests. The same as I got online/through school.
