Thread 32 - Corona Cohort 'May' the Mumsnet force be with them for their venture to exams

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 06/05/2022 23:48

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

crazy, is he doing Eduqas for RS?
DS said it was “fine” but there were a couple of “ weird” questions, but “ you can just waffle.
Sounds like our DSs are birds of a feather!

Alsoplayspiccolo · 26/05/2022 19:23

Oblomov, this is the recipe I use (at the bottom of the article):

amp.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2012/may/18/picnic-recipes-fashion-glyndebourne

I don’t always include the salted caramel, and I don’t cook for as long as suggested - just until the top is set, for squidgy brownies.
Also, I am careful not to over beat the sugar and eggs - the less whippy it is, the more dense your brownies.

Pourmeanotherwine · 26/05/2022 20:09

DD didnt like the Russia paper today. The essay questions were ok but she struggled with the interpretation. Lots of long words she didnt really understand. Hope Classics tomorow is better.

Heifer · 26/05/2022 20:15

@Monkey2001 re PE Sport England question - DD said she had expected it to be a 15 marker or maybe an 8, and has done loads on it in the past and lots of practice questions in her mocks etc so wasn't a problem for her. I think it must depend on how much of the spec the teacher actually covers, DD said her teachers has glossed over a certain topic so she struggled to write much on that (she relied on her previous knowledge). As your DS said even if they can't get full marks on every question (who can?) they can still score highly.

sazzy5 · 26/05/2022 20:18

@Heifer @Monkey2001 yes my DS did PE (how do you remember such things!) it’s his first exam so not got a lot out of him. He struggled with the sport England question as well, but he found that part of PE very boring. Fingers crossed for them.

Oblomov22 · 26/05/2022 20:38

Thank you Piccolo. I have taken Brownie notes. I will make them.

cariadambyth · 26/05/2022 20:43

Those brownies sound delicious, dd is our chief brownie maker, I’ll pass on that recipe.
DD says the Russia paper was a mixed bag, liked the essay but really didn’t like extracts. All done until after half term. Hope everyone gets some rest and respite next week.

Oblomov22 · 26/05/2022 20:49

Appuskidu and Popcorn, pourmeanotherwine, that Russian History paper sounds very tough. But lots of the topics are not my favourites. I had a much easier ride, I loved all my topics, many years ago,

Oblomov22 · 26/05/2022 20:53

Agreed Cariad, rest needed.
We are going to our Dorset caravan for a week tomorrow. Ds1 is staying at home. Back home early, because I'm going to see the Killers. I'm going to Ds1's leaving school mass at 1pm tomorrow. Apart from collection of GCSE certificates, on results day, I've barely been to secondary school, so looking forward to it.

EwwSprouts · 26/05/2022 20:56

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn but there's nothing worse then the post exam chat and finding out you've done it wrong
except when you come out of an 'old style' A level where it was 3 hours and just 3 big questions from a choice of half a dozen and your teacher tells you that one of the ones you picked to tackle had never been covered in lessons (I wasn't one to read around)...

mummyinbeds · 26/05/2022 21:06

DS vaguely got out of bed today, skipped school which he says is optional 🤔 and managed about 10 minutes revision. Its the last day of school tomorrow with a traditional fancy dress pub crawl. I'm guessing it will be messy.

Elsewhere DD got full marks in the driving theory test she was convinced she was going to fail because DS wouldn't let her practice on the App on his phone.

Good luck to those with exams tomorrow 🍀

crazycrofter · 26/05/2022 21:18

@Alsoplayspiccolo AQA I think but I’m guessing they’re all similar! At least they’re relaxed…

ProggyMat · 26/05/2022 21:33

Well done to all that have sat papers today! ⭐️
I’d echo a previous pp’s analysis that ‘dream, fine, okay, awful and absolutely hideous’ ought to be placed in context.
All that matters is that our fabulous Corona Cohort DC feel that they have done their best on the papers they have sat so far and that is all they can ask of themselves and we too as parents.
It’s a ‘learning curve’- that they have been denied given they could not sit GCSE public exams -as we all know!
Onwards and Upwards! ❤️

Oblomov22 · 26/05/2022 21:37

Well done Mummyinbeds 🚗
Nice to hear of something else, car success, in and amongst all this exam chat.

EwwSprouts · 26/05/2022 21:52

Good luck to those sitting the last exams before half-term!

EspeciallyDistracted · 26/05/2022 21:52

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn what is your DS's third subject? DD is planning history, biology and psychology. Which I think is a good combination for someone who doesn't have a particular career/degree in mind yet but sounds like hard work.

I'm going to DS's school tomorrow afternoon to help at Sports Day, DD and the other 6th form sport students are helping if they haven't got an exam and I'm on the PTA. It's always a lovely event although it will be weird that there won't be any other 6th form parents there I don't suppose. DD has GCSE Chemistry so I'll be picking her up from school first.

Pourmeanotherwine · 26/05/2022 22:10

I hope you enjoyed the Killers @Oblomov22 .
I can hear them from my living room lol.

Chakraleaf · 26/05/2022 22:11

My son had history today. He wasn't impressed but said it was OK. That's as much as il get out of him.

Oblomov22 · 26/05/2022 22:16

Next Saturday pour me.
I've been waiting 2 years for them!

Fiddlersgreen · 26/05/2022 22:31

@Oblomov22 I’m seeing them on Friday, very much looking forward to it, also had the tickets 2 years!

Fiddlersgreen · 26/05/2022 22:33

Our school doesn’t seem to be doing any leavers events which include parents too,
DS2 has a leavers assembly and DS1 has a leavers fete afternoon

ealingwestmum · 26/05/2022 22:58

Well done to your DD Mummyinbeds, onto part 2 for her!

mango0 · 27/05/2022 00:45

Well done to all who have sat exams today! I think history sounds so hard. I didn't study it beyond year 9 and reading the comments on the exams reminds me why. I think I'd find the content really interesting but be terrible at the exams.

DD has had a fairly relaxed day today. She did revision at school but then went into town with friends for a couple of hours afterwards and has spent the evening getting sorted for our camping trip. Her teacher gave her a copy of Wednesday's Further Maths paper which he'd completed, she was pleased that from what she could remember of her own answers she seems to have done well. Tomorrow afternoon they're having a year 13 celebratory gathering together at school.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Wheresthebeach · 27/05/2022 08:14

Gotta say I love 'find my phone' app. Can check that DD is at school without her texting that all okay with train journey.

First one today - Geography. Fingers crossed for everyone doing exams today. DD's main conversations with friends yesterday seemed to be around the temperature in the hall, which can either be freezing or boiling, so lots of discussions about what to wear.

Hope everyone has a good half term.

scabby1 · 27/05/2022 08:15

Good luck to everyone sitting exams today.
Ds has Geography.
